Full Tilt - All ins on first round

Im new to the tournament scene (NL low stakes). whats with people going all in on the first hand with nothing.

This is extremely frustrating. u got a fair to good hand and some nit goes in with 3 7 and hits and takes the pot(with like another two 3s). even if u fold he now has a stack 4 to 9 times yours.

Are these players just risking it all to get an early jump in the game and if they miss join another tournament?

Stay out of the mix

at least till the crazies stop doing that or you're in position to at least have only 1 or 2 opponents.
I guess peeps think that if they get knocked out of 5 turneys quick with that initial play, the one turney that they actually get some chips up front in, they will do well because of their larger stack. But over time, you will see that those donks get knocked out real quick usually. So just play your game and you'll be fine if you have the patience.
Key word there is PATIENCE ....

i dont understand it either , and its not just a freeroll thing ive noticed, but u know what i love is when it happens and i do have good cards and i call their silly bets and take them right on out, happened yesterday at my 6 seater table first hand and woohoo 3 of them gone, played a very nice game after they were gone and was actually the most exciting game ive had in a long time lol, only thing i can tell u is 2 sit tight cause they usually arent in the games long tc

^What Chilebeeny said, pretty much.

It's hella frustrating watching the donk double and double and take out much better hands, but when you hit your premium hands it gets nice and juicy. Also, the fact that so many chips are at your table is a good thing, if you consider yourself a decent player. Imagine them in front of you in a few hands and it wont feel so bad :-)

It also usually has the effect of loosening up the rest of the table too, so the counter strategy to that is generally to tighten up even more. Something worth considering when you're wondering what your villain may have just pushed with.

I've found patience is a virtue if you want to place in a large tourney or freeroll. You can capatilize early in an all in table if your'e heads up with only the best hands, i.e., AA, or KK, AKs. Otherwise, I stay away from confrontations and wait for these players to drop...and they will!

An all in on first hand doesn't really accomplish much. The blinds are small and even if by some miricle everybody folds you have risked everything to pick up about 45 chips. People all have short stacks and you risk all by just taking a chance for just a few chips. No preflop is worth risking everything when you are holding just a pair at best at that time. All ina anybody can win with anything.

It is so 'unnormal' that it is normal these days. Conventional wisdom has it that you would only want to play top 2 or 3 hands during the early stages of any tourney, freeroll or low stakes.

There are a whole lot of folks with too much money, who seem to have the mindset 'big stack quick or out'. They do not want to grind it out in the middle of the pack.

Suggestion. Wait em out.

When people are going all in during the first round of the tournament just keep reminding yourself that poker tournaments are marathons, not sprints. The chips will be there in a couple of more hours and you can often double up without risking everything you have.

yeah i find it one of the most annoying things which is why i will generally sit out the first few hands & pray for a couple of bad hands during the opening minutes of a tournament ... if only the poker gods would listen & stop just giving my bad hands from the rest of the tournament ... or giving me some like AA or AK on the first hand when some t w a t goes all in with 7 3 off & sucks out a full house!!!!

FYI, the behavior you describe is actually the opposite of "nit" - a nit is generally a very tight player....
