Freerolls and re-buying
So heres the deal... been sitting at a free roll now for about 20 minutes. A player has re-bought 7 times already!!!
Now that makes it R154 hes bought in for. 8th pays 150 1st R700 but there is still over 700 players in it. This doesn't make sense to me. I understand trying to accumulate chips with "donkish" plays but going all in when you hit a pair? It just doesn't seem right to me and he currently only has about 1/2 the starting stack.(re-buy period closes in 10 minutes) Am I missing something here? or does this guy need a big fish label? |

Dont know how the how the re-buy is used with the prize pool ( I actually always thought the site just keep them in the free rolls ) but as to why your fish is doing that. Let me take a guess as to this player probably push all-in on the first hand and showed something dumb like K3. Allot of people believe that if they can get an outstanding chip lead early on then they can cruise the rest of the tournament playing solid poker ( such a stupid strategy though ) so they just fire with any 2 cards in hopes that it will keep dbl. them up. Just get threw thi,s I have been to a few final tables and usually 8/10 of the table nether re-bought or add-on they just played good solid poker. Good luck and spear those fishes

Well it seems this guy has no clue what he is doing. He went out about 15 minutes after the rebuy period ended in 632nd place. Total buyin was R220 OMG!!!!!
In a freeroll I see no need to put money in it. Its a donkament more often than not and only in the last 50 or so does real poker come into the equation. <----overstatement . Maybe do the add on if you are near the top else play it for all its worth. The money for the rebuys does go into the pot (less the rake) but winner only gets 14%. So to me this play was sooooo stooooopid! |

I am more then guessing you are playing on Bodog, I believe they have the best free roll. It is a donk fest but just play like a rock to stay alive, but once in awhile take a major draw if your involved with a cpl. donkeys and your getting good implied odds. You want to try to get 80-90k by the time it gets down to 100 this will give you a good chance of making it to the final table.

No actually this was on a South African site called 3 piggs poker...Our largest online poker site. Remember Ray Rahme..placed 3rd in WSOP event last year...he represents the site.
Anyways...I agree with building up a good size stack but doing it by going all in on any two cards....no way! You still have to play quality poker and get your money in when you are ahead. Play the odds, but decide when they are in your favor rather than against you. Sure you can steal chips by strong plays but all that is required is to end up against some monster hand with mediocre cards and you are out! Maybe I'm just too cautious! and yes Ill be the first too admit it...Im often called a Nit and do play too conservatively...at times . However there is no ways Im adding more money to a freeroll unless I stand a better than average chance of getting my money ++ back. |

The only time I have ever purchased a rebuy in a free roll was back when US players could still play on Titan. I was however about a 24 pack deep at the time. On a side note I really really miss being able to play at Titan it was and still is my favorite site even though I can no longer play there.

Just to check... when you rebuy, does it add to the prize pool? Or does the prize pool stay the same no matter how many rebuys people make?
If they prize pool grows as people rebuy, then maybe there's some merit to it. But if it stays the same... eeewww! |

Can't speak for 'all' rebuy FR's, but as from the ones I've seen, the rebuys are added to the prize pool. Never played in one but watched a few as observer to see how they play out.
Observation - unbelievable donkfests. Even the $1 buy-in w/rebuys and add-on on Full Tilt states in the tourn lobby "You don't have to be crazy to play in this tournament, but it sure helps" That was warning enough for me... ![]() |

The rebuy does go into the pot less the rake, however you are not getting the same return on your money even if you win. Winning it gets you 14% of the total money ie prize pool + rebuys.
With 700 odd people still in the game and the majority not rebuying the pool does not grow by huge amounts. This particular game ended up having a R835 payout for first place. Id understand the add on but to rebuy so many times and then still not even get near the money just seems ridiculous to me. |

The freeroll rebuys I have played the re-buy goes into the prize pool with no rake. The only rake is on initial tournament fees. This one may be different. Still makes little sense to me to spend R220 (which is about $31) on a freeroll. ---EV.

Taking many rebuys is generally not worth it (coming from a man who's only MTT win is one).
Let's say that you start with a stack of 3000 points. You lose that three times and Rebuy. Now let's say that 50 players started the tourney and there was therefore 150,000 chips in play. Now there have been a lot of rebuys and there could be like 210,000 chips in play. This means that you don't rebuy for the equivalent of 3000 chips as at the beginning of the tourney, but rather its the same as starting the tourney with 2143 chips. |

If you'll notice, most re-buys are guaranteed tourney's. Also note that at the start of most re-buys there are not enough entrants to cover the guarantee. The re-buys usually exceed the guarantee.
In a freeroll, it is a cheap way for the site to offer bigger freerolls at lower cost to themselves. I believe both FT, and PokerStars offer $0 buy-in +R+A tourneys. Without looking PokerStars seem to run every other day. As for the strategy. The rebuy period is typically one where you would tend to see much looser play, folks taking chances with marginal hands is the norm. On occasion things will go good for them, and those same LAG players will tighten up and play very good poker. In the meantime, many will start that same way, but have no clue, and will blow that early chipstack on really bad play. My advice is to be aware. |

Some people get really angry when they loose and they want revenge. I have seen people spend $20 or more for rebuys on a FREEROLL that they could just wait a few more hours to play another one. Only reason I see is they want revenge.....

The free rolls on Bodog are guarantees. So correct me if this is wrong, but I believe no extra money gets added to the prize pool unless there is over $500 in re-buys and add-ons. This would make it even stupider to re-buy or add-on.
