Flopping a Boat (or even Quads)

Seems like often when I flop a boat (or one time even with Quad 2's), I never get any action. I check the flop, everyone checks. I check the turn, everyone checks. If I bet alittle on the flop or turn, everyone folds.

Seems like the only time I make money off of a boat is when I hit it on the turn or the river.

Any suggestions for getting the most money out of people when you flop it?

I would bet on the flop (minimum) to make some people on draws or just high cards try to limp in then they can call you, and then you check the turn and hopefully they make a stab at the pot. That is how i play it.

if i flop a boat im willing to check it all the way. even to the river. cuz if anyone has anything theyll eventually make a bet or try to bluff the pot. but even if u make a small bet no one is gonna come in if they have trash

I think it all depends on what type of player you are and if the people you're playing against know that. Playing on-line, i always bet the minimum if i flop the nuts. I've noticed I'll get called even with 2 overs. If you're known as a tight player, check the flop, a small bet will smell like a trap to better players. If you get re-raised, definately take your time before calling (unless it's an all-in with no one else in the pot.

If you flop a very good full house or Quads you should almost always slowplay (occasionaly mix up your game). If you flop a boat, you want a big card to come that might give someone two pait. Or lets say you flop a boat with A7, if a paint card hits someone might think that their KJ is good for two pair. I will usually check the flop and if someone bets I will call. On the turn I will usually check again hoping that someone made a second-best hand and then either check raise or cold call. On the river I will almost always make a value bet to pick up some more dough.

I've had the same problem--in my opinion if you've got the best hand, chances are people at the table have jack shit and are just working on a draw--and not willing to pay for it, hence the drops after your small bets. My best luck has been going all-in and acting like I'm trying to buy the blinds, sometimes this pisses people off enough and they think I'm bluffing--that's the only time I've ever been paid off with monster hands after the flop.

depends on the stakes but you are almost better off betting because people might call and you could get paid on the deal from some dead money players. and if everybody folds they weren't going to bet into you. Now if you get a ton action maybe slow it down and let everybody else do your work and bring the heat back on the river.

Flopping the best hand is where I do best at, I always check flop and turn and hope that at least one or two hit something, not always but most of the time if it's being checked to the river there will nearly always be someone to try a bluff or bet high on the river with a pair or even ace high.
Let's say a pair flops and you bet straight away, everyone else has got to assume you have at least the 3 of a kind so if they haven't got at least that they are going to fold and you've wasted a damn good hand. At least by checking and calling to the river you have the chance of some action.
A prime example was just last night, my wife was dealt AJ and the flop saw AJA, she said "should I go all-in?" and I said NO don't do that, just check, she checked and someone bet about 200 chips, two others called, wife calls, next card comes King, more action, the first guy bets 500 and the other two call, so does the wife, river card comes out Ace, unreal, first guy bets 1000 other two guys call and my wife then goes all-in, first guy calls and other two fold, huge pot.
Now I believe that if she'd gone all-in on the flop she might have had the first guy call but the other two would have folded for sure, this way she maximized her great hand and also got to see it get even better by playing along till the river. This was a rare occasion but I usually find usually about 5 or 6 times during the course of a tourney you'll hit the unbeatable hand, it might only be the highest flush or the best full house but they do come, always maximize your chances with these rare hands, don't scare everyone off or you may just as well been dealt a bunch of crap if all your going to do is win a couple of blinds.

Here's something else I do quite a bit when i've flopped the nuts, i've done a small bet on the turn card and if someone calls or even raises and i'm first to bet when the river card comes i'll check, this makes the other player think he's got the better hand and will over bet, then you can push him all-in, hopefully he would have put in so much that he'll call anyway.
Remember, be patient and wait for those good hands, they will come and when they do make the most of it.

yeah same here well sometimes u just have to check and check making them think that u dont have the card and bang u do :P

When you flop the boat, it's more probable than not that no one else is going to pick up any piece of the board even if you check all the way to the end. Even if they hit a small pair later, they could still be weary, and don't want to risk a bet to win a small pot if only the blinds are in it.

bet a little to get some action and hope somebody catches something and raises...

You have to keep a good read on the other players around you~ most the time you would want to check check check and hope that they pick up a hand~ If you have been caught bluffing in some situations ~ you might go ahead and throw a medium sized bet and hope that someone has AK or a pair thinking that that is good. It all depends on were your position is located and what they did before the flop~ If in doubt PUSH IT~ lol

What I usually do when the flop turn to a boat or quads for me, if there ain't no suited cards on the flop, I would check until I see 2 suited cards on the table, so others may think I am betting to a flush trial.... and if there is a straight or flush possibility on the table, I would check and hope someone thinks he has the nuts.

Flopping a boat is my ideal hand. I always check through the flop (of course) and if no one bets on 4th street I will make a minor bet. If anyone follows bet big on the river. If they fold you will at least walk away with a little something.

Hey Trent~ to follow up on your play of the full boat~ Great when you flop it, but keep in mind how other people are playing and say if someone is limping in first position and or 2 3 etc... they might have a medium small pair~ if you are known to be aggressive and the flop was 8 8 5 and you were on the button with 8 5 if they check ~ make a play at it not a large bet maybe half the pot if it is still small otherwise a minimum bet~ It does not always play to slow play your big hands ~ you want value and if you think someone will give you action get them into the pot as soon as possible~

It makes sense that in most cases your not going to get much action. A boat is impossible without a pair on the board. If the flop hit them at all, They've got either trips or a pair. The former is unlikely because you already have one of the cards they need. If they've got the pair then they may be worried about the trips represented by the pair showing. You will see action later on if a third matching card falls on the turn or the river. But unless you've got top trips, it's not the kind you want.

If you flop a hand that big, you liekly have the deck crippled. However, especially in multiway pots, I will often lead with those hands in hopes of running into a bigger hand. Let's say for instance the flop is AA10, and we sit with 1010. It's likely that someone is in here with an ace, and if we bet out here, we won't put a lot of fear into the player with the ace. He will figure that we could be betting a hand like K 10, and we are drawing very weak against our trips. If he just calls, this is a perfect setup, because he will think he's trapping us. On the turn, we can either check it, and represent having a single ten or perhaps bet it hard again, putting "pressure" on the player with the ace. If he waits too long to raise us, he will have put in too much money and will have to call us for the rest of his chips.

this is really not that interesting of a situation and if you are lucky enough to flop quads or a boat you should make a "feeler bet" which is a bet that is either the size of the blind or double it which is what i do, and then you should tr and sense strength or weakness if someone calls and base your next bet (or check) on the next card.

id try to check raise it but it goes till the river ima try and make it look like im buying it

I would follow moose's advice and do what he does. You want to feel what type of hand the other people have...

I have also found it frusterating when I have a great hand and get no action. THat is why now I just go all in with the nuts, sometimes I will get a dumb caller, and if not I am happy with teh blinds and original bets.

Well one way is obviously to check it. But then you may have everyone else checking. I think that if you bet out a little bit, although you may get rid of most of the players you may leave say one player that has mid pair, or is drawing. He will oviously not beat you, so if you let him make his draw or then check to him, he may bet a ,ot out at you. Supposing you are playin ina tourney, you bet out after hitting quads and one man calls. He then hits a flush on the turn. he will bet out very big whether or not you check toh im so do it and get as much of his money out of him as possible. just my point of view, anyone else got an idea??
