Donkeyrolls! Oops I Mean Freerolls

Has anyone noticed anytime you play a freeroll you get the all-in donkies? I mean come on push your whole stack in just to pick up the blinds. I use this mindset play a freeroll like you would if it was a money game. You make less mistakes that way. Once I started doing that my play did get better or was it because i started reading some good books?

So far I have read Phil Gordon's Little Green Book of Poker, Sklanskys Theory of Poker and Advanced Holdem and Doyle Brunsons Super System 2 but i didnt like it very much not a lot of information on NL Holdem. Would like to pick up a few more especially releating to Pot Odds and Implied odds still trying to get a better understanding of those 2 theorys.

Well, if it is poker books you are looking for, then I highly recommend Dan Harrington's (currently) three volume set. I love the books and recommend them to anyone that asks. Even if you've been playing a while, start with volume one, you won't be sorry.

Donkeyrolls, I like that term.

I play my freerolls a lot like cash games with the odd raise or so. Have you noticed that most of the all-in donkeys tighten up drastically after they eventually calm down. I almost become the donkey when they do, raising them big when I'm not holding much. Donk them out of their donked chips

JD is right - HoH vol 1 is really good on pot odds.

Super System 2 didn't get very good reviews (haven't read it myself) and you might be better off getting the original out of the library and ignoring the sections on 5 card draw, Hi-lo Declare etc.

Re: the freerolls, it doesn't pay to play too tight early on, because the donks will just donk off their chips to someone else. You need to get involved in as many pots as possible just because the implied odds are so good.

I totally agree with one caveat. While trying to get into a lot of pots early (in a donkroll), don't become a donk yourself and push all in with crap. You do want to be in, sure, but do it cheaply if you're getting in with garbage. And you need to be able to lay down crap post flop (even if you get a tiny piece). If you check in the BB holding 72o and the flop comes AK2 with 3 or more people in the pot, expect that you are likely beat. Playing many pots does not translate into throwing away your skill and playing many pots badly.

I agree, harrington books are great, i have volume 1 and it provides some real solid strategy and examples, definitely a must read for players.
