Do your MTT strategies differ from your STT strategies?

I ask this because I have found that mine really dont except in terms of longevity. I stay fairly tight and play premium hands but I will from time to time go into a hand with hands like A J offsuit and medium suited connectors to pick up a few chips in the MTT's I stay really tight in the STT's and try to make a big move with a big hand to boos my chances in cashing. Just wondering if you guys change your strategies for the different events?

I play a lot loose in MTT's than I do in sng's. In a sng it's all about making it into the money, so you want to play really tight. In a MTT it's all about winning the tourney, not finishing just after the bubble burst. So if you have a big stack when you get to the bubble, you can really pick on the small and medium stacks(who are just trying to make it to the money). So I usually try to get a big stack early and you won't do that by playing very tight early in the tourney.

Osmann thats pretty logical. I never really tried to amass a big stack early on because I will go kinda lax and play more hands than I should. I like to stay tight so I can stay on my toes so no one tries to bluff and steal on me. I like to make my moves at around level 8 or 9 when the blinds are worth stealing and the ante have come into play.

MTT it is more about acumulating chips and avoiding slow played hands that can cost you. You want to accumulate chips so that you can start to put pressure on the smaller stacks and pick blinds up when you can. I am very loose and aggressive early on. Nobody wants to go out in the first couple of blind levels so all-ins and large raises won't get called as often. Once you start seeing short stacks, then it comes time to steal blinds and aviod large confrontations. I like to win small pots that keep me there, I am not looking to really knock people out. I will gamble alittle more on draws and bluff more with continuation bets to keep the pressure on the smaller stacks.

STT it is more about patience and waiting for the one hand that can make your game and get you into the money. Here the first couple of blind levels are all about feeling each other out because you know nobody will move into their seat when they are gone. I look for the person I think I can bully or take advantage of later. You need to make quick reads on the others so you know what to do when the blinds are up at a higher level.

Yes, MTTs and SnGs are quite different. MTTs are generally about not taking too many risks early on, and steadily building up a chip stack. SnGs tend to put a bit more pressure on you. On the other hand, MTTs generally pay out around 10% of players, so you have to last a long time to place in the money. SnGs normally pay 30%.
The payout structure affects how profitable it is for a reasonable player. MTTs you have to not just get in the money but beat a lot of hard players to get any significant return for your time. SnGs you get more of a return for your time if you tend to place only just in the money.
