Do pot odds go out of the window in a rebuy period???

Hi all.

Like a lot of people who basically play a TAG game I sometimes find it hard when people call with poor odds in a rebuy. For example, calling a pot size bet with a low flush draw - basically getting 4:1 odds and paying 2:1 to hit a hand that is possibly beaten anyway.

So, got me thinking, is it possible in the rebuy period, to forget pot odds and hope to gamble your way to a healthy chip stack? Basically, do what a beginner would do and forget about what everyone else is chasing and bet based on your own cards only?

Just a thought?

No, they don't. The rebuy just allows you to make some more gambles in hopes of getting a big stack. For example:

You have and 1300 chips

Flop comes

You bet 100 into 150, and are raised to 380. Normally the play would be to call and fold the turn if you don't hit your draw of 12 outs. However, since you can rebuy, the play probably becomes a shove.

So you're just looking to find a few extra places that are good to get all in, and you're not playing as conservatively as you play a freeze-out. But you're not just throwing away money, trying to build a big stack. You still want to get your money in as a favorite whenever possible.

The example u give here is more an aggressive play with outs, rather than a play made on pot odds.

However, it is the kind of move I would normally make in a rebuy that I would only sometimes make in a normal game (obviously depending on more things such as position, chip stack, etc, etc)

We're a 1:1.23 underdog against a Q, we shove, and our potodds on a shove are 1.5:1 while we neglect the 2.25:1 pot odds we get on our call. Either way, we have the correct pot odds to make that play.

There, I included the words "pot-odds" in the post. Happy?

What you're really doing in a rebuy is considering pot odds more. In a freeze-out, chips have diminishing marginal utility, or more simply, getting extra chips does not equal the same extra chance of winning. The 1001st chip you earn is not worth as much as the 1000th. So in a freeze-out, you will ignore plays that are + chip EV because they're -$EV.

However, in a rebuy, chips below say 2x your starting stack all pretty much have the same value, since you can reload and get them back at anytime. So you can think about pot odds more, and make more plays that are + chip EV.

I think this is similar to the poker term `schooling` ?
`Where a group of poor players acting in the same hand can make their actions become less bad.`

In your case take out poor player - I`m not meaning to be derogative to you, but it does achieve the same effect? Builds up the pot so your move is a correct move based on pot odds?

I agree with your point about pot odds being more important - it does make sense.

I think my problem at the moment is that I`m either running scared or on tilt - I`m always convinced that no matter what outs my opponent has, they will hit!!! This is on the back of a few bad beats.

example being Omaha hi lo I`m holding AA24 double suited. Flop A33 another guy pushes all in, so I call. Turn 9 river 3 - he shows quads - that is the worst one this week

Because of running scared or tilt, I`m finding myself short stacked towards the end of the tournys - Check out my stats on OPR - it shows I have an idea of what I`m doing

Thanks for your valid points - made me think.
