Different raises for different positions?

In Phil Gordon's Little Green Book, he states that as his skills increased he found a system of raises that worked better for him than the standard 3xBB raise:

I have experimented with this, and really like it. Lots of times, however I am raising 2.5x from almost everywhere, w a slight increase on the button. The idea is that you are playing smaller pots out of position, bigger ones in position.

Oooh that does make sense. I generally just raise 2-3x everywhere...but perhaps I'll give that a try
