Did i do the good move?

Here's the situation , i got a little more over the chip average (its only a freeroll but im new at poker i play since 6 months) , the guy to my left min raises while im in big blind, i watched him play , he enters every pot and plays loose/aggressive , so his min raise doesnt mean much to me , everybody folds to my big blind and the flop comes 5 6 7 when i hold 7 8 off suit . I put on a half pot bet to know where im at and to pick up the pot right here if he has nothing , but the guy strangely puts over 30 k in a 4k pot. it doesnt feel like strenght to me so i call. He flipped ace 4 , he hit his straight and the non-needed ace to beat my pair of 7.
Did i make the good move?

Yea, most freeroles are new players or players that have just run out of money. So they are either pissed off and don't care or they just don't know what they are doing. It is so hard to read someone who has no money in it.

Thank you for the answers , it was a bad beat but not heartbreaking one since its a freeroll and obly top 3 players get paid , even more donkey all ins in that situation .
