Could I have played this another way?

Hey just wanting some advice.

Playing live 1/3 at my local casino. In big blind I wake up with JJ.
Utg calls, all fold to the button, who raises to $13, sb folds. I call, utg calls.

(Just a quick note on these two players, utg is solid, and button is at this stage getting a bit tilty. They both like to check or flat call flop bets, rarely leaving a hand without seeing the turn)

Ok so flop comes J 7 9 with 2 hearts. I bet $25, utg calls, button calls.

Turn comes a black 7. I lead again with $35, utg calls, button folds.

River is a 2, no flush possibilities. At this stage I find it hard to think utg has a good enough hand to call a river bet, but I still lead out for $40, and he min raises to $80. He has about another $120 behind, I have him covered with $200. I re-raise all in, and he thinks for ages, and then folds. He shows his fold as 7 9, and everyone at the table is like WTF WHY DID YOU FOLD, I then showed my J J and this guy is insta hero.

Now, is there any more money I could have gotten from this guy by for example min re-raising his raise? In my head im thinking my shove will pay me off more in the long grind, but id like a few other peoples opinions. Thanks for any input

My only real observation about this hand is the following: how does a player that's bad enough to limp 97 UTG and call a button raise to $13 have the ability to fold his boat on the river? There are only 6 combos that beat him (3 each of JJ and 99). There are 16 combos of T8 that he beats, quite a few 7-x combos that he beats, and several overpair combos that he beats (and there are players bad enough to shove overpairs in this spot).

In fact, I now think this is probably a -EV fold in the long run. Anyway, the hand makes absolutely no sense to me. Nor does your description of this player as solid. None.

Sorry I should have said seemed solid till that point. And you are 100% correct, you don't limp 7 9 and not get all your chips in on the first opportunity when you've hit a full house. Them my peeps tho, casino I play at is full of these preflop limpers.

I was just unsure of myself and my own play, wanted to get some input as to whether I did the right thing through the whole hand. As I am only new, to this site and live poker, I just wanted some advice.

Not that what you said wasn't helpful HooDooKoo, it was very helpful, I've learnt so much :shot:

Perhaps solid you mean he's been getting lucky a lot? Plays loose and can read the hand well?

Everything else in his game pretty much out the window.

When I play at crown Melbourne... I always get reminded of preflop limpers it's crazy.... And hard after a couple hrs not to fall into the trap of playing marginal hands etc.

Yep... Usually when you find yourself falling in the trap its time to get up and go home... Or get up and have a coffee/redbull heh

Worst table I remember well I ever sat on... First hand was AA vs KK I hit trips and doubled up, I should've just left then and there and went home with that $200 :).... Only other hand I did well on was QQ hit the set and they flopped the str, I hit the book...

But anyways the point was within those 2 hands it was just mindless limping and no one hitting anything... Was really boring and everyone wasn't enthusiastic... The other tables were a lot more chirpier, then I read an article on that exact same scenario... quiet table and the other table chirpier, saying if that's the case your at the wrong table etc... happier people tend to throw more chips in on the table etc...

I got lucky to leave with money... cause most times the house would've beat everyone.... I guess nowadays i'd actually straddle to induce action.
