I'd rather pair neither and have rainbow 4-5-6 BUT, I would guess I'd rather pair the 8, since you're probably outkicked by someone who thinks they had the nuts PF with a A7/A8 or K7/K8. Now they've paired the board and are more than likely going to take a lot of $$ from you.

I like to throw in a raise with 87s and up in mid to late position. I play tight enough (VP$IP ~16%) that it's normally just a blind steal but it also mixes it up enough that when I do hit the flop hard I usually get paid. As for hitting the top or bottom connector for a pair. Who cares either way it's generally a loser hand and you can't really invest many $$ with it.

re: Connector cards question poker I'd slightly rather pair the 8. Really, the two situations are almost identical. If you pair the 8, you have a 7 kicker, and there are 6 better kickers. If you pair the 7, you have an 8 kicker, and there are 6 better kickers. The only difference is if you're up against 77. With a pair of 8's and a 7 kicker, you beat 77. With a pair of 7's and an 8 kicker, you lose to 77.
