Cash games v MTT

Hello

I play mainly MTT and SNG`s. When I first started I played cash games and I did not enjoy them and I was not very successful.

A lot of ppl say you should play all kinds of poker and play cash, MTT and SNG.

Do you guys think I`m missing out by not playing cash games?

I feel more comfortable playing MTT and SNG`s as there is a limit to how much u can lose, and I play the game for the glory!!!

I don't think you are missing out at all. Play what you enjoy and/or are good at.

Conversely to you, I tend to only play cash and MTTs, and very few sngs

All require different styles of play and thinking, so I wouldnt worry about avoiding one type.

Most guys who have had a few successful cash sessions usual think that this is the game for them, however the reality over time is most fade away due to being fairly irratic, or overplaying their bankroll (and as a result over-feeling the badbeats). Playing large volumes of cash hands in one format does tend to get very tiresome over time, so it's is good to have a variation for a bit of fun (ie for me that means MTTs)

I'll agree with Welly here. Your not missing out if its not a game you overly like or have much luck at. There are many players who make a living at poker that are great at MTT's but lose at cash games and vice versa. Now I am mostly a cash game player and make money but have been trying to mix it up and play more MTT's and SNG's, just to try something different and see how I do. Stick to what you like and do good at but maybe give a cash game a try once in a while and see how it goes.

You can limit the amount you can lose in a cash game as well: it's limited to the amount you take to the table. Just choose a table that is within your limits so you can't loose more than you can afford.

I enjoy cash games because you can just go and play 5 or 10 hands if you want, and leave at any time. I don't play because I need the money, but because it's fun due to the challenge of building up your bankroll, which is your "score".

You'll also find the experience you gain from cash games will help you with your tournament play, and vice versa.

If you want to try something a bit different, have a go at Stud or Omaha Hi-Lo as well - they're fun for a change.

Most people are not equally capable at all types of play, and the enjoyment factor can also vary, often according to personal and therefor subjective reasons. And then, you can factor in how much of your motivation is to play for fun vs. to make money, how important it is to you to be capable at the various game types, etc. and there's a lot in the mix. For myself, I mainly play for enjoyment, and I like MTTs best, so that's what I play most even though I average more per hour from ring games.

I say that it all depends on your style. Some people arent meant for ring games and some arent meant for tournaments. Find what youre best at and stick to it. I also want to say though that it is good to be ring game player because you can win more money I believe in the long run if you are good at it. You may see quicker changes in your bankroll on both ends of the spectrum, but if you are a winning player then you will see it rise more. Just my piece.

You know I have not had much success at MTT's although I did play a ton a freerolls on-line in teh very begining of my poker play but once I started playing live ring games I came to a grand conclustion...............

The time spend playing tourneys vs. the time spent playing ring games just didn't add up. I mean I have play a couple dozen 60'ish buy-in live MTT's and placed in the money a few times. Once I placed second and took home a nice bundle. But when I add up the hours vs. the same hours playing ring games. I make at least 8 times more cash playing ring games per hour. Now maybe I am not a good tourney player. But I am not sure I will ever play tourneys for a living. Ring games are the sweet spot for me and will be my full time paycheck very soon.


As many others have already said, what works for you works for you. What works for me works for me. Find your place, focus and hone you talent. That is where the money is......................what makes you happy

I like to play in Cash games and MTT's mostly, but I haven't got the knack for the cash games as much, so I tend to not make as much in those types of tourneys. SNG's are what I'm best at but they tend to have less excitement for me than the others. Cash games you can win BIG or lose BIG, so I have to remeberthat when I am playing.
