Can someone help me in Razz Poker?
I have been playing Razz Poker for quite a long time and still haven’t been able to get that touch that needs to win a game. I am really trying my best to be good but at times other players take the cake away. I need to update myself on some good ways that really work and help you to make your worth in the game.
Each and every suggestion is appreciated (no off topic suggestions please). |

Random tip #1 - pay attention to other players' upcards. Even an otherwise good starting hand like say 257 can actually not be worth playing if you're in early position and the other players are showing 2 3s, 2 4s and a 6 or suchlike (i.e. cards you need to complete a strong low hand).
Random tip #2 - Use your upcard(s) as a bluffing tool. It doesn't matter if you have (KK)3 or something, if it's folded to you in late position and there are two people still in the hand with a K and a J up, you should be completing. Even if you get called, your hugely stronger board will generally mean you are able to take the pot away on 4th or 5th street if the cards fall close to equal or better (for you). |

As a 'general' rule for me, I don't play any hand (except the kind of bluff hand Dorkus notes) with a card higher than 8, and even a 6,7,8 is NOT appealing unless the board show cards dictate otherwise.
A brick (10 or higher) on 4th or 5th street is a caution flag. 2 bricks by 6th street is a 'no go' for me, in most cases. Watching the board of the other players is a strong MUST. Almost the exact reverse of stud, forgetting str8's and flushes play. |

I found these two articles to be exceedingly helpful:

Here are a few articles that helped me totally destroy 5c/$1 and $1/$2 Razz on fulltilt.
Razz Poker Strategy, Tips and Rules - How and Where to Play Razz Online Stud Poker Strategy – Razz, Part One | Poker Strategy Stud Poker Strategy - Razz Part II | Poker Strategy Razz Poker Strategy + the links that OzExorcist posted. Also, (although I have not read it myself yet) I suggest you get "Sklansky on poker" and read the Razz section. Just play tight, simple, wait for good staring hands and you'll have way the best of it at the low limits. |

Know your players... ie: know which players on the table are likely to draw to 2 or three cards, know which players are likely to throw their hand away if they brick on 4th or 5th, know which players will always bluff with the lowest board cards even if their hole cards are high. And adjust your play to suit who you are in the pot with.

In razz lots of the time it is your starting hands if you can get 3 cards that have 7 or lower u should play if u got over you might not play... usually it depends on how many people trial behind u if u r hitting good cards that don't double and their is a group u can play and if u r hitting bad cards and their is 1 person besides u playing u can keep playing and see if they hit bad cards as soon as they r showing 2 cards with 10 or higher u know they need to hit their last card if your cards are bellow if and always their 3rd worse card on the board has to be used in their main hand. so if some one is showing a pair of 5's with a jack they keep betting then u see a anther 5 a jack a queen a king or a ten u know the jack or ten if that is their other card will have to be in the hand... so yea usually some people try to play with a high card showing at the start usually u try to over bet them make them push more into the pot for seeing something with 1 brick "brick meaning a bad card"

One thing that many inexperienced Razz players don't do (and they will verbally rip you a new one if you do it to them) is raise their strong draws. If some fool is betting into your A2344 (fours face up) with 89T showing, then cap his ass (meaning max out the betting, not...... the other thing). In his mind, he "knows" his hand is better than yours because he's not paired up, but you have two shots at a gazillion outs and have a much higher chance of winning.

I think that it's also important to try and get heads-up if at all possible. You don't want to be drawing against 4 other players on 5th street. If someone completes ahead of me, I always either reraise or fold. I also never just call the bring-in, if someone wants to play their xxJ to 4th, I make them pay for it.
Most low-limit RAZZ players seem to only consider the boards. They will play anything as long as their board looks better than yours. If you avoid starting with inferior hands (as in, not even a single card over an 8 or a pair, unless you are stealing) you will be far ahead of the average player. Finally, paying attention to the cards that are already out is a big part of it (see the post above from Dorkus). One thing that I would add is be sure to consider the other side of it - you want to see your cards duplicated on the board as much as possible. Every time a card you hold shows up in another person's board, that is one less possible pair card for you to catch. |
