Lowest five cards of seven wins. Straights don't count. Flushes don't count. So, A2345xx any suits is the very best hand. Dealt like 7 card stud.

HEY! Not everybody who plays Razz is a donk. I won a Sunday Weekly ticket playing razz and I don't think I play like a donk. However, others may have a different opinion.

Best, simplest explanation I ever heard: From this years Espn HORSE coverage:

Kenny Tran: I don't know how to play razz.
Barry Greenstein: Get 5 low cards; 5 cards lower than everybody else, you win.

now pig , I didn't say everybody who played razz was a donk , razz like all games has its share of donks , and it was those donks that I insinuated were responsible for his bitterness . I also enjoy razz . see you in the ccop razz event , final table .

Razz has a different type of donk: the ones who have no clue as to what they are doing. Every tournament starts out with someone getting a full house and wondering why they lost.

Razz is like a easiest game to play in my opinion.

you have to get the lowest hand possible which is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. flushes and straight do not count in this game. you do not want to get pairs. the main thing above everything is that you need 5 different low cards. FOR EXAMPLE. you could have 1, 2, 3, 4, J but that is a crappy hand. the other guy could beat you with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 because your last card is higher than his. a way to figure out if your going to beat the other guy or not with lower cards is to see it like this.

( ) parenthesis means your cards are hidden

PLAYER #1 ------- (Ace) (3) 6 9 4
PLAYER #2 ------- (???)(???) 5 10 K
PLAYER #3 ------- (???)(???) 4 5 6
PLAYER #4 ------- (???)(???) Q 2 J

Now you are player #1, Ask yourself which person has the best chance of having the lowest hand???? The correct answer is Player #1 and Player #3 If you look at it, two of the three cards revealed will be used to make the low hand everytime so just remember that and look at yours and theres and you'll know if you even have a chance.

Also, one thing that many newcomers to Razz fail to understand is how the hands are compared:

The comparison starts with the HIGHEST card in each hand and progresses from there, so

7-4-3-2-A loses to 6-5-4-3-2

because the 7 is higher than the 6. Many people think it is the A versus the 2 that is the deciding factor.

Cool Tip

Here's a nice little tip that can help out anyone with razz:

Best Draw vs. Made 9 Low after five cards.

A interesting feature of Razz is the little known fact that after five cards are dealt, the best drawing hand is a favorite over any made nine low. In most forms of poker the made hand usually leads the betting to make the draw hands pay, but in Razz, the opposite is true on fifth street. Things are back to normal on 6th street however. With one card to come, the made nine low is now a favorite over the best draw and should definitely lead the betting.

Razz Help

Razz is won by holding the lowest five cards, A,2,3,4,5 is the best hand called the wheel. Flushes, pairs, fullhouses ect. do not count. The best way to learn it is to watch a ring game and then check the chat window to see what hand won. Hope this helps, gl in your gamming!

You're right about the flushes, but not about the pairs and full houses - they count, and they count against you.

Straights and flushes have no effect on the outcome of a razz hand.

The winning hand of Razz is the having a lower high card than your opponents high card. And this is what makes this such a beloved game.

Razz is a game you must play only if you have an abundance of hair and can afford to lose some, or if you are bald and it doesn't matter anymore.

If you are anything in between these two then you should avoid this game like the plague.

You know that you can't avoid razz in a HORSE tournament no matter how much you like or don't like it. (R -> razz)

I think it's OK if you've got a sick sense of humour as well - when your 24A staring hand bricks out to 24A6KQT, sometimes you've just gotta laugh.

But it's definitely not a game for those who scream "BAD BEAT, BAD BEAT!" every time someone makes a flush on the river to beat them in hold 'em

During a game of 7-card stud some time ago, there was a very bad player who would play all kinds of garbage hands. Once, after a good player took a particularly bad beat from him, in his anger he said to the bad player: "Rrrrrrr Ass****", but stopped himself short of saying the last 4 letters. So the bad player became known as Rass, which later became Razz.

This is how the game started.
