Calling just because of Pot odds?

I can sometimes understand calling because you have the right odds, but I'm talking about the people who are like "I gotta call I got pot odds", but why would you call if you knew you was beat regardless of what price your getting?

I think people misuse pot odds sometimes and it often times cost em money. I tend to try and use pot odds on draws and such I tend to try and stay away from calling just because I am getting the price to.

Remember just because its cheap enough to call doesn't mean you should.

Well that's the point of pot odds - you can call when your pot odds are greater than your drawing odds since in the long run you will make money. If you're getting 3:1 on an all in with a flush draw and your opponent flips over his set, you're still calling that bet every time since in the long run it will make you money.

I do completely agree that a lot of people use pot odds incorrectly though.

I find calling with pot odds to be a little situational. LAte in tournaments if I have a big stack I will call. Ring games are much different IMO.

I don't like pot odds like that.. its hard to tell whats gonna happen next.

its impossible to know what is going to happen next but pot odds can be an excellent tool in situations where you are unsure. I highly recommend learning about pot odds - so at a minimum - you might understand they way your opponent is going to play/act. Understanding fold equity is critical when restealing late in tournaments.

Well i think you kinda answered you're own question. You don't use "pot odds" when you are paying somebody off because you invested alot in the pot. You use pot odds for something like--you are in the BB and somebody goes all in short stacked later in a tourny. If you call you are getting slightly over 2:1 on your money, and you hold a 78s. Well the odds are he has at least 2 overcards, so you are probably about a 1:2 dog, or he has a lower pp in which case you are 1:1, or something like A6 (idk 58:42? off the top of my head) or he has an overpair, in which case you are toast. So for 3 of the 4 situations you are definitely getting odds to call and he isn't likely to have an overpair if he is having to shove with any 2 decent cards. That is a simple "ok i get 2:1 on my money and im slightly more than 2:1 to win".Or like you said on draws.

I don't think anybody should really argue that "i know im beat but i am getting 8:1 on my money" so it is a good call..

I've made some great calls based simply on pot odds when my opponents are just min. betting when I have an inside straight draw. I just made a series of calls about an hour ago in a tourney based on pot odds alone.

I was pretty sure I was beat, but the pot odds were so good that I had to call. And his betting felt as though he was on some kind of a draw or weak hand, so just maybe my bottom pair was good. And it ended up paying off.

If you actually know that you are beat then technically you don't have pot odds to call anything at all. Doesn't matter if you are getting your money in at 40:1 if you have a 0% chance of winning the pot you still don't have pot odds (2.5% money invested into pot > 0% chance of return).

Pot odds isn't really the right term. Sounds to me you are talking more about paying off value bets, which isn't a good play regardless of the "odds".

pot odds on river bets are based on the range of hands your opponent could be holding...factoring in things like percentage of time he is betting a missed draw, or second pair etc. Pot odds when there are still cards to come are based on you improving your hand to beat his range.

Implied odds are even more important than pot odds IMO, especially in cash games or when trying to "chip up" early in MTTs.

Pot Odds are very important and most the time your calling with them you are behind but just because you have pot odds does not always mean you should call cause you might be drawing to a dead hand such as you are drawing to a straight but are getting 10:1 odds but theres also a flush possibility on the board and you believe your Opponent has the flush, even though your getting Great odds for your straight even if you hit it you are still probably behind and actually drawing dead. Thats kinda the concept behind Implied Odds. You are adding in what you can win or lose from the hand if you make it on the next card or two. In that situation your are getting 10:1 pot odds but since the possibility of you drawing dead is out there your odds drop drastically definitely to the point where you can no longer call.

Also in tournaments are different than cash games but they both need Pot Odds and Implied Odds. In Cash game they are more straight forward but you might also make a call that your not getting perfect pot odds but is cheap just to set up an image for your opponents. Same with Tournament play but also you will be wanting to get Into the money so around certain areas of the tournament you might be receiving 10:1 odds on your straight but its also the bubble and you have to put 80% of your chips up to call well no its not worth chasing even though your getting the proper odds you are also risking too high of a percent of your chips to close to the money where if you would fold you can easily find a better spot to make up for the lost chips but also you will probably smooth easily into the money than.

I've been calling a lot of good pot odd flush draws lately, and haven't been hitting my flush at all.
