Book Discussion - is there interest?

Many of us have read the same books on poker, and I was wondering if there would be any interest in dissecting parts of them and discussing them here for all to get a deeper understanding. We would not be quoting passages of the books, of course (copyright, etc.), but we could decide on a book to start with, and then discuss the strategies put forward in it, in a fairly moderated way (for instance chapter or chapter).

Anyone interested in doing this? Some suggestions for books we could do this with (picking off common reads):

Theory of Poker
Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players
Small Stakes Hold'em
Super System (1/2, although 2 is probably more relevant)
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players
Harrington on Holdem (1/2)

Does this sound interesting? Any book you'd prefer to start with?

Sounds interesting, I was going to start rereading Holdem Poker for Advanced Players, but have not yet read SS2 so that would work for me. A word of warning, I would make a good audience member but other than for belaboring the simplest & most painfully obvious, (just beating Rob to the punch, lol}, am not sure how much I will be adding to the discussion.

Great idea, it always seems no matter how many times you go back and read them again, there is always something new to learn. The discussion idea would help us get so much more from them.

Just think of how much you might get out of the discussions, and that's what would be the best part of this. I'm hip, I love to discuss the aspects of the game, and the thread could be a big help to all who read it, not just those who are regular contributors.

Great point, Kind of like a cliff notes on all the great poker books. We could find all the great stuff and look back to it.

Since this seems to be a popular idea, I'd like to suggest that we start with Theory of Poker. Many of the other books (all of them, actually) will fall back on concepts that are discussed in ToP, so that seems like a good place to start.

It's the best $20 you could ever spend out of your bankroll anyway, so go get it if you haven't already.

That would be my pick for the first one to use. This should be very interesting, I'm not to good at soaking up all the stuff in ToP anyway.

The more I think about it, the more it stands to reason that ToP should be the first book. It has a lot of really important yet not-immediately-intuitive concepts in it, and I think an almost chapter-by-chapter discussion would be cool.

Before we start (I can start us off, if you like), I want to add a request: Please don't quote passages from the books in the discussions, or at least not more than is necessary to get the point across (and that should be marginal). I don't want to get Nick into any copyright trouble, and Mason Malmuth has been known in the past to scour the internet for places where parts of his books have been re-printed without permission.

For anyone who doesn't own this book yet, I wholeheartedly recommend that you buy it as soon as possible. And not just to participate in our "book club" - consider that icing on the cake - but because it's just a great book.

/FP

We sure need to be careful with this. Chapter by Chapter will be great. I think page numbers will be fine also when we are tryring to get across a certain point, so we can all go to it and re-read it.

I think you (FP) should be the one to start us off! Maybe in a new thread

I'm at work right now, but i can go by the bookstore here in the mall and see if they have theory of poker (its more likely that they don't, however, because i haven't seen it).

anyways, i'd be more than happy to take part in this discussion.... maybe we can do it on AIM or something in a chatroom with live realtime discussion as well as on the message boards.

If you play on Stars or FullTilt (or any other site that offers some sort of point programme) check if they have the book available for purchase through points there. I know they do at Stars. I can't think of anything better to do with the points anyway

this sounds great, there is a lot of information in ToP to wrap your head around. I've found it's a great book, but some of the concepts get deep. Looking forward to it.

I'll start us off in a few days. I need to dissect the book into suitable chunks so we have enough reading for a week that we can discuss. One chapter a week would take us almost 6 months. :P

So those who do not yet own the book still have the chance to get in from the beginning. Hurry!

So more than one chapter a week is the plan then? I read chapter one and two over again last night and if you can tell us the "chunks" you plan to do we can be re-reading the chapters through our discussion. So we're fresh on it for the discussions that week.

I didn't plan on buying "Theory of Poker" until I was at least done with "Harrington 1" (1/3 done now). Guess I'll just follow along with the discussion and refer back to it when I start reading that one.

A new and separate thread for each book is a good idea. That way, those of us reading a book later can find the discussion easier and even add to it or ask questions down the road.

If mother nature doesn't hem me in, I'll pick up a copy tonight or in the morning. I'm a fairly quick reader, so no problems on any starting times, I'll fit in somehow.

My plan was to start a new thread for each "chunk." The idea being that I start a new thread, allow for a few days for everyone to read and then the discussions can begin; that way, everyone will be given prior notice and will have ample time to read the chunk that is up for discussion.

I'll start the first thread right now!

MrSticker, it's okay to bump the threads once you get there, but as a personal tip, I think you'd actually gain MORE from the HoH books if you've gone through ToP first. Your call, though.

AWESOME!!!

Not just reading the books but then discussing them with you guys! What wonderful fun! Count me in! I will try to get ToP tomorrow and catch up on the 1st 7 chapters. I got SS 1&2 for Rock for Christmas and he got me Slansky (and Annie Duke) for my birthday so I have a few on hand.

I am REALLY looking forward to this! Thanks so much for organizing it FP!
