Big Slick

It seems as though every time I get this hand I always lose. I have heard that it is a good hand but for some reason I have no success with it. Does anyone out here have any suggestions on how to effectively play this hand?

Thanks yall

The advantages of AK are mostly in it's preflop value:

1. Fold equity. This is the biggest advantage of AK. For me it is almost alway a REraising hand preflop. For you to take advantage of this, you MUST play it aggressively (your opponent must fold). Small pairs can't really call you for fear that you have a bigger pair when you play it aggressively. If you do get called, even by something like QQ, you are still only a slight dog.

2. Pre-flop dominating hand. This is mostly applicable against donks who will call you with Ax soooooded. Inversely, you are only really dominated vs AA or KK (and you have about 30% vs KK).

3. Post flop your top pair always has top kicker when you hit.

Obviously when your opponent goes all in he has neutralized AK's biggest advantage as he can no longer fold. Against two random cards that don't include either and ace or a king you are not that big of a favorite with five to come, as other posters pointed out. But you don't ever really want to be calling an all in with very many hands (AA and KK excepted)-- YOU want to be the one doing the raising or pushing.

Just to look at it another way, let's compare AK to a small pair, say 55.

AK is a dominating hand. IF your raise is called you are (most likely) either:

1. way ahead (vs. a weaker ace)
OR
2. in a 50/50ish race.

With 55 you are (most likely) either:

1. way behind (vs. a bigger pair)
OR
2. in a 50/50ish race.

See the difference?

AK overrated

Ok bigslick is a good starter..so Id raise as long as im in postion but if nothing good comes for you on flop and someone starts raisen it may be a good idea to just let it go and fight another day cause any two cards can take it...ak is very overrated i think...but this is poker so do with it what you will and gl with it cause it gets me alot too.

*sigh* Im going to jinx myself for saying this but...I like AK. Even if its not suited. I win more than I lose with it. But Im usually smart enough to know when to fold it. Its a good hand because it gives you monster hands, and it lets you know when to fold it. Maybe its just me. But now that Ive said this Ill probably lose alot with it

Most overplayed hand ever. I think its too hard to get away once it does hit. Seems lately I hit the A or K on the flop but run into a set and just cant let it go.

In order to overplay something, one needs to get it alot.

Its hard to get away from it when its not the best, unless you know how to play AK well.

Count which hands wins more against each other: QQ vs. AK and see which one wins more. I find AK beating up QQ more often.

I could be wrong about this, but everytime I see slick against the girls, slick wins more often than not.

Against KK, its about 40/60. AA, its about 5/95.

Im not good at the numbers obviously. But like I said, just from what I see

I have been on a bad streak with Big Slick lately, I even have folded it several times preflop because I kept getting sucked out on with it. I know that it is an excellent hand though, I just need to do more reading on how to play it.
