I like that advice. He is so right - my head is sometimes so cluttered when I am at the table that I forget to play the players.

It is phil ivey's first full tilt tip and I couldnt be more unsatisfied.

what he is talking about is legit but it just wasnt fulfilling, especially from the great mind of phil ivey.

I read this piece yesterday, and really liked the advice. I often find myself, at the levels I normally play, over thinking and over analyzing what should be fairly clearcut instinctive decisions.

I agree with the playing the players and not so much the cards.....i also agree that many people try to play like everyon else or just like someone else......although if you play in your own uniqeu way it may not be as profitable if you play lie a mathmatical player or a reader ...i dunno i just think that the greatest have all the great poker player traits all in one!

I read that yesterday, and frankly I don't think it will really help me that much. just kind of seemed like common sense. Sure everyone forgets it from time to time, so it is nice to see him spell it out.

i think it was a very good tip and reminder, and it is true, for example:
you make your descisions base on maths people will pick up on that and use it against you, it will be very easy to bluff u since all they got to do is making a bet that dont give u odds to call

What I have learned in live tourney play is when you are in the money mess with people heads as much as you can especially the other large chip stacks at the table. Dont be bullied and always fake weakness against large stacks because they always think they can buy the pot outright. I love playing at a tight table late in mtt live play raising stealing blinds, showing bluffs reraising with nothing at showdown with middle pairs to symbolize poor decision and card playing. People will take note of this style of play and try to take advantage of it. The key is being able to change gears and get back into your tight style of play when the time is right. When you do this timing is crucial with all of this but if you hit you monster pocket pair and the other large chipstack hits a high pocket pair also thats when all the work pays off. They dont have a clue what you have in the hole and assume you are playing stupid. Wrong you are back in the zone and using there own self aggression towards them. Let them build up the pot and play maniac while holding the nutz. Guess what happens next they push there huge stack in the middle and you rip away huge pots. Last time I won first in Atlantic City I did this all throughout the middle stages of the game. People were so pissed off that they no longer made the mathematical call downs. They were playingf to eliminate me because I wore there nerves thin. I even suggest playing what I call Mike Matasow poker as he does it the best. For instance there was 3 people left I was second biggest stacked and I was dealt AJ pf guy in late position raises after I just call. The flop is a beauty A J J full house baby!! and the guy who raised came in with Ak and is feeling really good with his cards as he should. He looks at me and tells me ( your not winning this time) and bets out big 10k. I take a long time before I make the call and build him up as I know he led into the hand with aq or Ak telling him I think you are full of crap and probably have 10s or 9s. I then make the call. Next card is a 8 I know this definitely didnt help him any as he pushes in his remaining 50 k. I then say man you must have a monster hand pushing all in im thinking you got the house. He says call and find out. HMMM I say maybe I will and call with my jjj over AA . He was some kind of pissed and told me that nobody has ever gotten to him throughout the course of a game like I did. He then told me early in the tourney I bluffed him out of trips and 2 pair twice because he though I hit my flush or str8. this is proof to me that no matter who you play always mix up your play and change gears when the table gets loose or gets tight. Take advantage of undecisive players in live games if you are good at reading folks. It was almost hilarious how many tells I was recieving while playing that tourney in Atlantic City. I would have to say it was the wasiest 5200 dollars I have ever made in a poker game. I loved taking 1st place and the Hilton is great because they even let my wife sit behind me at the final table. Very Rare they allow that. Anyways good luck everyone...

I agree with Ivey here and its a great tip. I noticed, after reading tons of poker books, learning all the odds and math, my results really don't improve drastically. However, I ALWAYS find that if I take a few days off of poker and just do something else that I enjoy, and don't think about poker at all, when I come back to the tables after my break, I ALWAYS play very very well and make a lot of money in the first few hours.
