Anyone here successful in MTTs?

No matter how hard I try I just can't seem to make a final table in a big Mtt. 9/10 times though I either get in the money or to the bubble but when I cash I barely win anything, only my buyinback plus a little more. I've had a few big cashes for $3000+, but I noticed these were always in smaller mtts with less than like 300 people and all these times I got extremely lucky at one point or I picked up a lot of huge hands. I seem to do much better in sngs or ring games than mtts. What's the secret to success in MTTs?!?

I'm the same way. Except lower limits. I do really well with sit n gos but have a hard time in mtt's. Sometimes I place in the money enough to win a couple bucks over my buy-in. I've made only one final table and got 2nd. My best yet. It was a long time ago. But in sit n gos i'm in the money more often than not.

Once thing Ive noticed is when I do well in mtt it happens to be when im playing agressive. I'll get a quick double or triple up and then sometimes i turn agressive and do well. Other times i tighten up and get pushed around until the blinds do me in.

Seems ya got to be an agressive player to do well in MTT. Or go on a few good heaters.

Most of us serious about poker realize that skill is a big part of the game, but often we tend to overlook how huge "luck" is also a factor. We've studied the percentages and adjust our bankroll management to account for negative swings and variances and hopefully play winning poker.

Luck and time involved means as much if not more than mad skillz.

Looking at Poker Stars tournament leaderboard DNA2RNA is currently number one. Then looking him up on PDB you see these stats.

In 1 and 1/2 years of play DNA2RNA has played 4431 tournaments and got 1st place 94 times. That's 2.12% of the time, he only makes the final table 13.65% of the time, has only cashed 714 out of those 4431 tournaments.

There are other factors to think of as well, DNA2RNA can afford to play because of BRM, bigger buy-in tournaments with fields of 300 players and less. If he had to play 2 to 10 dollar tournaments with 1500 to 3000 players I think his stats would show worse.

In my case in the same time period I have only played 656 tournaments, got 1st place only 4 times at .61% and final tabled 13 at 1.98%, cashing 77 times of of 656 tournaments played.

I can't play 4000+ tournaments due to time constraints and brm limits me to smaller buy-ins with an average of 1300 players per tourney.

Just making the final table is in reality, RARE for anyone, all anyone can do is study the game, fix their leaks when they find them and try to play as consistently well as they can. Skills are important, staying with in ones brm and having the TIME and PATIENCE to work ones way up is important, but luck is a factor too, that's just the way it is.

So making the final table, winning first place, the thrill we seek, is difficult, but if your good enough you'll only do it RARELY it comes with the territory.

What's the secret to success in MTTs?!?

A bankroll that will allow you to play 100 buy ins of your Mtt level.
Major patience one day you'll hit the big cash.
Try stick to Mtts with not more than 500 players pretty impossible on pokerstars in low buy ins,thats why i'm waiting until i'm rich to play the $109 Mtts

In my opinion it's all about proper bankroll management e.g currently i am going to play 100 $11.70 DS will spend $1170.
10 tickets worth $215 each is all it takes to make 1k profit.
Not too hard out of 100 games i'd imagine.

I've done well in them up to about 500 players, anything over that and you're winning so rarely it's scarcely worth it. When you do hit you'll get a big score but it adds a lot of variance to your bankroll, I generally prefer tournaments with 100-200 people and STTs just to keep the variance smaller, makes for smaller but more frequent wins.

There is no one secret. Smart people have written whole books on the subject without coming close to exhausting it.

My own personal experience is this:

As others have also said, tourneys of 500 or fewer entrants are preferable.

I found that my results improved when I started specialising in a small number of regular tournies. Previously, I had flitted about from one site to another. Specialising allows you to develop a feel for the rhythym of that particular tourney and to build up notes on the other regulars. It was only when I did that I realised how regularly the same small group of players (now including me ) figure in the later stages of their favourite games.

Yup, there's a $33 on Party which I've FTd many times where it's not uncommon to have notes on 4 or 5 players when I first sit down. Makes a huge difference.

Ive been playing alot on Pokerstars and Titan the last month, after having a 4 year break from online poker gaming.

Ive focused on playing the 45/180 seater sitngo's with more or less luck.

I've been discussing strategies and plays a lot with a bud of mine, that has been of great help. Having a streak of 6 tourneys/sitngo's ITM finishes. And topping the events with a 1st place in a 2$ buy in on Stars with 850 entrants, giving a price of 500$,

What I've learned since starting play again is that seeing less flops is better than trying to chase every hand in case its a great flop. In my latest events i've been seeing around 15-23% flops, ditching all hands that I belive not to be the winning hand, and playing the my good ones hard.

The experience is that this approach to the tight game works really well, in most cases it will take you to the ITM-finish or the finaltable, what i 've also learned is that I have to be in the right mood to be consistent enough to keep this tight game all the way through a tourney, and not fall off the chair and make them crazy chasing bets.

Alltho having the tight approach it self just aint enough, having the skills on howto ditch a good hand when you sence that the opponents hand are even better than yours are imminent! Also the ability to switch from your tight game to a more aggressive style are important, especially when getting low-stacked and/or when you make the final table...
