ADD?? (attention deficite disorder)

This is also one of the problems I seem to have. I get into a tournament quite a ways and seem to lose focus. Any tips? I'm makeing some reaaly stupid mistakes! And it's not just losing against better players deep in the tournaments. I could be much more successful if I could figure this one out!

Surely if you lose focus part way through a tournament because of your ADD, then by definition you are not a better poker player than those who don't suffer from it? It's like saying I'm a great poker player but I have no BR management skills...

I am ADHD - there is no way for me around it so I gave up. I will never be a great poker player. Or even good for that matter lol.

I have friends with ADD, and it isn't something I'd really joke about - but each to their own, I suppose...

OMG you two both need to chill. It's was obv he didn't mean it as a joke about people with ADD (even before he posted the apology I merged above), he meant it in terms of that's how he feels. It's like someone making a comment about feeling retarded for having done something. Obv they aren't actually retarded and they sure as heck are not making fun of the mentally challenged. Also, this is the internet, learn to take things with a grain of salt.

One of the main stigmas about ADD is that people automatically assume you're mentally challenged.

I don't have ADD, yet most people would probably agree that I'm mentally challenged.

I have ADD and it's very hard to stay focused in long tournaments. I take adderall which helps, but just makes me talk more....lol
I've never tried it, but I see many pros with the ipods. Maybe that will help.

Me too lol. My poor husband knows when it starts kicking in every morning. I can't shut up at all for the first hour.

I don't take it on my days off though and that is when I mostly play poker.

for some reason i don't have a problem staying focused. i guess being a single father has taught me some patience. i do have some simple things that i do that keeps me calm and keeps my mind from wandering.

i will chew sunflower seeds. this keeps me busy while not having to think about doing it.

if you don't listen to music while you play, you should try it. i find that bands like pink floyd does the trick for me. nothing to heavy and nothing to soft that will put you to sleep.

Try multi-tabling, that way you won't have time to become distracted!

Focus on the good hands. Play ONLY 1 tourney at a time - if you play 3, your attention may be taken up more completely, but you will not keep track of each tournament individually. Fold bad hands - try to play hands on a 'point' system. Assign points for each card, and set a general limit about folding anything below point total, unless certain combinations such as pocket pairs (IE: Face cards = 10, Number = Number, Ace = 11. Only play 20 points +. But that's not too good of a system lol.)

Double edged sword solution.

I often have a side game up. Tetris like, it happens to be called Jewel Quest. A fast game and often I can pull a whole game off between hands.

It serves 2 purposes;
1 It keeps my mind occupied while I sit through hand after hand of perfectly foldable cards.

2 It keeps me from being a bit too adventurous with less than very nice cards.

On the other edge of that sword is that when the good cards do show up, I haven't got the reads I would have had I paid attention. Or I get more into the side game than I am into the poker game and guess which one suffers?

I agree with this kind of herbs much more than the herb suggested first, being a recovered addict.
