playing 99 post flop
the guy from early position makes it 2.5 times the big blind. i call with 99 from middle position. i called because i didn't know the opponent's range and i wanted to keep the pot small with many uncertainties. the flop comes queen high(q72) and he bets little more than 2/3 rd of the pot. Should I raise or fold? i called to keep the pot small and see what he does on the turn. he once again bets same amount as on the flop. i call, hoping he has ak. king comes on the river, he checks; i check.
what did i do wrong in that hand? what r the factors that i should be thinking about that i didn't? |

A pot size raise would be $6800 if my math is right (calling his bet of $1600 + matching the resulting pot of $5200). This is about 2/3 of your stack. There is $3600 in the pot to win right now. You're in the SB which means you are out of position for the rest of the hand. AQ off suite doesn't seem like the hand to risk a nice stack here. I'm inclined to advise a fold here, but I'd probably put in a big raise myself. How's that for some clear advice? On the other hand (how many hands do I have) maybe a call is right. If you hit something like Q or AQ or KJT on the flop you've got a well disguised hand.
OK, how's this sound? A limp and a minimum raise seem pretty weak. Put in a good size raise like $4000 and see what develops. Yes Regis that's my final answer. |

With AQ, I think it's better to maximize fold equity preflop given how small our stack is. 3-bet or fold. In a cash game, I 3-bet every time. I'm not entirely sure how well that translates to shortstacked tournament strategy though, but your equity ought to be better than your fair share and you will trap some dead money in the pot.
