Hello all. I found out that there is a local poker club one town over. The place is pretty packed 7 nights a week. the biggest game is 1/2 with a $250 buyinn, but they have $60 buyin 1/2 five nights a week.

I will be going for the first time next week and I hope to get some advice here b4 i play

I have played in casinos b4, but never at a private poker club. The only thing that concerns me here is playing against a bunch of fish that only use level one thinking and I dont want to overthink this.

Has anyone here played at a private rec club? and if so, what should i expect?

thanks

I have not played in a private "club", but I have noticed in my area many of the players are at least familiar with the other players. It seems like the situation would be similar, so chances are the players all know each other. You should be able to use that information to get clues on how everyone plays.

I've played in clubs started out there actually cash record and mtt is well in the black, to be honest amateur live poker is for the best part a fairly low standard.
Almost all live regs don't play online for a number of reasons, one being if they we're that good they'd be playing 4-6-8 tables online making a decent income
not grinding out one Mtt or cash table a night.
Alot will also believe online poker is rigged or not the same as ''real poker''
they are the real experts ofcourse, with their out of position King rag queen rag offsuit flatting range.
and Ace 7 Premiums and limped pots in late tournament play.

Theirs no real right or wrong winning solution I can give because you never know what table your going to sit at, you'l find isolating pots is quite hard I would guess and the standard raise will need to be bigger than 3x or you'l be getting 4 or 5 callers every time.

Listen to the conversations at the table about their hands or anything poker you'l soon pick up what level thinking they are on.
Keep it basic with the simpletons,
and with thinking players you want to be thinking alot more about your perceived starting range and their post flop game.
The amount of times I've put thinking players in real tough spots because they are willing to give you credit for repping a straight, or repping strength when they hold like one pair, even overpairs if It's a tricky board and they are definitely on like AK or QQ-AA.

Other players will just call you with top pair weak kicker, call draws and complain about how they are getting no luck.
These are the ones you wan't to go to town with when your strong
avoid when your speculative or got a decent semi bluffing type hand...actually speculative is ok for cheap because they'll pay if you make a draw

Just remember to think backwards, what hands are beating you, and if you can get enough information on the player to know how he plays the hands beating you pre flop, you can rule those out of his range and your onto a winner, Domination!

hope it helps

Play YOUR game, observe the players and play accordingly.

Likely that most will know each other, but few, if any, will actually know you. Keep them that way, but get to know their tendencies.

Enjoy and give us feedback.

keep an eye on how much they rake. the only problem i've ever had at a poker club anywhere was excessive rake (sometimes being "whatever the dealer could get away with.") and if rake is 10%, uncapped, you're not going to be able to win long-term.

other than that, you'll just have to see how people play. good luck.

Just found out today that since it's a private social club, there is no rake. guess they just make money off selling booze and food. which is just fine by me, i love busting out those boozies, the more they drink the less they concentrate. I am going out tomorrow night, going to pretend to be an out of town visitor for the hollidays thats never played live poker, i am goint to have a friend take me. \
