Plenty of pointers & comments. The entire site is pretty much devoted to comments & pointers on the subject. Best thing you can do is look around the forums. Search for Bank Roll Management, Learning Poker, Books on poker. Anything you wish to learn about is on the site, but if you're looking for someone to encapsulate the various information from around the site, I doubt it will happen. Here's a good start... Bankroll Management (Long) and... http://www.cardschat.com/f11/10k-pos...e-long-112835/ Bear in mind that you said you play poker tournaments, with no mention of which games you play and what buy-ins or field sizes so specific answers are not possible. Good cards, and welcome to the forum.

kaiWalk makes several good points - I think more detail is needed for more detailed answers. But I can at least answer your question very generally. I haven't been playing poker (live or online) that long, but I have never made a deposit in online poker. This is of course a different way of approaching things. My initial line of thinking was because a lot of online poker rooms have freerolls, I wouldn't have to make a deposit. Then, I started to wonder, should I make a deposit even though I can't constantly win? My answer was no - I know that freerolls are played differently because early on there are a lot of unsubstantive plays made (constant all ins and hyperaggressive betting) but how could I justify making a deposit if I can't beat the weaker players? (not necessarily criticizing you or anyone, btw) I figured, until I could start playing well in freerolls (and subsequently in low stakes tournaments) I shouldn't make a deposit. I've stuck to this idea and have, I think, made improvements in my game - now I play in low stakes tourneys even though I haven't made a deposit. And again, just a general response to your other question - I do think online poker is different from live poker. You can't see the person playing behind the computer screen - you can look into betting patterns and tendencies, but you may not be able to pick up a tell as you would in live play. Also online poker is much faster than live play so that can factor in - you may unknowingly be playing the game differently because the pace is different from what you're used to. So many things factor in, but the good thing is, this is a great forum and I'm sure you'll learn a lot. Keep a positive outlook, reflect on your poker play and chances are, you'll turn things around. Welcome aboard!

re: who has ever won more money than they have spent on a online poker site? There are only 2 reasons why a poker player will go broke. 1. They are not a winning poker player at the level they play at. 2. They have no or very little comprehension on Bankroll Management. Here endeth the lesson!

Jagsti has a pretty good evaluation. Keep in mind that if you've played both live and on-line, Dan Harrington says that play at $1/$2 live tables are equivalent quality-wise to 0.10/0.25 tables on-line, so if you win live you may play too high on-line. |

re: who has ever won more money than they have spent on a online poker site? If the question had been asked before the us government imposed laws, I would have answered, I broke even online.I would play 1/2 dollar tables on my 50 deposit and win then lose, then win big in a tourney every once in awhile to even it out. I had no idea people played poker to win money regularly, It was a very enjoyable hobby. Yes i have always won regularly at casinos. I go and play 3 to 4 times a year, so vairance, bankroll management are very foreign terms, there is no day in day out grind at the tables for me live, and very rarely have I gone and lost money. So what that guy said up there, online is very much bankroll management, because with the ability to play every day or week and the variance involved, you better have the bankroll to play with the highs and lows involved. BTW I learned this here, just think what i couldve done with all that money I deposited regularly years ago.

I lost quiet a bit on bodog because of the trouble I was going to have withdrawing it. I hate their process and long time to recieve check

I made my first withdrawal a few weeks ago and it was more than I have deposited, and I have a bankroll ongoing now. Im just grinding the micro sngs right now and have enough so that I can handle a massive downswing. As I believe many here said, this is all down to good BR management which I had never heard off until I started reading this forum. I beleive Jagsti has just don a article on it. BRM is the most important skill IMO as if you dont have the money to play or patience to build up throught the levels usally you will lose more than you gain.

I really like the idea of playing freerolls to buid a bankroll/ I myself have never added a single penny to any of the 5 poker rooms that I have accts with, and yet with each and every one of them, I have small bank rolls. Yesterday I started a new adventure with another Poker room and posted a victory, (see below) Now...this only netted me $4.80, nut it cost me nothing, gave me a lot of confidence and something to share with you. Plus, $4.80 is better than a stick in the eye. Anyway, happy hunting. ![]()

re: who has ever won more money than they have spent on a online poker site? I have, I posted £5 on VC poker... saying I was not gonna put any more on if I lost it. Got it up to £137 in time from playing $5/$10 tourneys then cashed out. Not megabucks... but very nice profit margin there!!

I'm grinding it out with free rolls and cheap SNGs. With no deposit I've gotten my BR up to about $20 in 3 months. Since I didn't deposit I can handle the times when I lose better (I think). And since it was so hard to come by I'm pretty careful with it.

Ive made a few thousand when all added together, I would suggest sit and go's. You can do normal ones or turbo's which I prefer due to the speed. The two I do the most are 2.20 turbo's where first is over 100 dollars or 12 dollar turbo's where first is around 600. Both are 180 people tourneys.
