I also learnt to play online, I like most played in free play money games to start and also agree that is a bad way to learn. Now I play online mostly and with friends sometimes.

PokerStarsPokerStars is one of the best poker sites on the internet. They accept US players and using PokerStars marketing code CARDSCHAT you get a $75 bonus.

PartyParty Poker is probably the best known online poker room. Use the Party Poker bonus code CC150 for a 30% upto $150 deposit bonus.

where?

i learned to play poker through one of those free lean poker booklets in a set up chips i bought.

Learn how to play on your own, so that its not influenced by other peoples' playing styles.

Then once you understand the rules of the game and how to win, then play and develop your own strategy and game play. If you play with someone elses strategy straight off the bat you may feel awkward or uncomfortable.

Finally, after you have a descent basic understanding of basic strategy, then read up on major players books such as Supersystem, Caro's book of poker tells, and many many others to add bits and pieces to your poker game.

All the Best!

i played my first holdem game live with 18 strangers. talk about being nervouse, for one i knew one guy and did not understand holdem at all. After that night the next day i down loaded a poker sight, deposited 50 dollars, played like a donk for about 6 months. Then I realized I needed to learn some strategy so I bought book on nl holdem read it about 20 times and I noticed my game improve right away. I also noticed that i was winning money more often. Since then I read every book on poker that I come across (alot are repetitive) and watch poker on tv and read threads on card chat which by the way sometimes are very helpful(thanks) I also started playing all kinds of poker games stud, razz, omaha, etc. Different games help your over all skills in my opinion. I learnt how to play poker about 5 years ago,on a free/play site called QOGS.
Apparently,QOGS was a software company, and the QOGS poker site, was a way for them to advertise their products.
They had 1x$30 freeroll every night, with between 200,and 300 entrants.
After about one year, some players were complaining that they had not received their checks through the post. This became more, and more frequent, and eventually the site closed down.
Not only did I learn to play poker on this site,it also made me very wary of small time poker rooms.

the lessons grandpa taught

I learned how to play cards by watching my grandfather and my dad play at various home games when I was young. Rough crowds at some, Mom hated it when Gramps took me but I loved it. Still do, except the crowds are not so rough anymore. Atleast not from my new prospective.

I started by watching the explosion of poker shows in the last few years, then moved to playing monthly home games and occasional $50-100 buy-in tourneys. I mostly enjoy the mid limit cash tables online now, but i do play sng's now and again.

well lets see...i remember as a kid i had a card that came with my deck (i was supposed to learning solitare lol) and it showed the different hands for poker...so being so young and none of us knew anything about poker we made up our own game lol...but when i really wanted to learn as an adult i downloaded a site and played for play money and watched and learned lol...watched them play poker on tv too that helped lol....i remember one guy when i first went online i had no clue what was a good hand and what wasn't he told me the best hand to get was 10 7 lol...he invited me to a play money tourney and was "coaching" me how to play lol....when i got 10 7 i didn't know what to do so he said to all in and of course i lost lol...learned real quick from there lol

Family games at 12-HU with uncle every lunch time in high school gleaming 5.00 almost daily from him.Navy played for cash, sub for duty, alcohol chits ,smoke chits (monthy allotments of cartons and gallons of alcohol) I always was more of the running of game(football pools also) playing some but relying more on setting up the game. Played in jail and prison for items and such other barter ect... Upon release from college of hard knocks. I only played Family and small work buddy games. Got kids to feed and every once awhile hit local card room. Broke even type got clipped in a small lo ball cardroom and Played very little for years. Poker explosion watching these youngsters taking down titles and big ITM's. The bug bit me and I have renewing my game and trying to be profitable. For all those people who might not like my past or might judge me. LOOKS can decieving and walk a mile in my shoes first.

Old Da' and online

My dad taught me and my siblings how to play poker, but that was the basic 5 cd dr and stud. In grad school we'd have a monthly poker game called "Choir Practice" (because we weren't allowed to post announcements about gambling on the walls) and played some crazy games like baseball, "follow the queen" and "f-ck your buddy", along with the basic stuff.

Online, I cut my teeth on Party Poker, but play mostly at Full Tilt Poker and Pokerstars now.

I really like one aspect of Carbon Poker -- the ability to rabbit the hand if everyone folds to your bet.

My parents taught me the basic rules of the game as a child. We mainly played draw and stud poker. When I was 21 my mom took me to Laughlin, NV and I sat down at a hold'em table and pretty much lost my $100 in short order hehe.

I started playing again in 2005 after watching poker on tv and reading books - I knew the mechanics of the game but there was so much more to learn. I love the psychology of the game so much prefer live over online poker.

NINTENDO DS

Hi,

I learned to play poker with a Nintendo DS game called Sega Casino (It came with the DS). Played that for a while then downloaded Full Tilt net and have played since the end of 2007. Currently I play at Full Tilt and Ultimate Bet nets. At the time I was looking at poker video games for the pc and I started thinking why pay for it and play against artificial intelligence when I can play online for free against real people. That's how I started. Have a good one.

About this time last year I thought 'there must be someting else to do on the internet other than watch porn'.I googled poker rules,as I knew nothing about the game, read it,thought that looks interesting, tried it with play chips online and loved it straight away.

I learned the game by watching it on TV and using play money at paradise
After a while i made an initial deposit which quickly went down the drain
Re-loaded and won more than my initial deposit back
Signed up to the OPT and entered a promotional freeroll on a new site which has now become part of merge gaming
i managed to place 2nd winning $140
This was in May 2005
I have not had to deposit any of my own money since then and i now play at various sites across the net

By trial and lots of errors at the play money tables at party poker in the beginning. Then I branched to different poker sites and am still learning, but I'm better than I used to be.

My Son taught me

I would take all my kids to Bingo when they were 18 and to the casino when they were 19.
My son taught me to play poker. Him and his friends would come over and we would sit for hours and play.
Kept him off the streets as well as his friends!

At a friends house, I had no idea what the hell was going on. Afterwards I downloaded party poker and played the free money games for a couple of days. Then I got bored of that and started playing live about a year after that. Took the real money online plunge and thats where I am now.
