problem being is that you spend a few weeks playing the play tables your brain starts to think that you need to play that loose to win - and obviously when you actually start playing the cash tables you get your ass kicked
id always reccomend new players to hit the 1 cent tables if they were really wanted to learn the game

I learned to play poker from the WSOP and WPT on television! I had no idea what poker was until that was previewed on television. I watched it a few times then became addicted!

the best way to learn how to play is to just play, you can understand what types of hands come up more often in omaha and 7 card stud and hold em and what it ussually takes to win. but to get the skill you have to play with money on the line were people play like there is omething to lose

I'm just like nearly everybody else here. I hadn't even known of Texas Hold 'em until I saw a documentary on cards and gambling on the History channel in 2002. Then two years ago, I saw the WSOP on ESPN and was fascinated. I watched probably every episode that year. Then, I basically taught myself the fundamentals, and turned to playing games with friends and playing online to learn the tips, tricks, and general experience.

Interesting story for you (well not really). About 6 months ago, I was still mourning the loss of my favourite tv show of all time, Friends. I was flicking through the channels one night, and I saw Matthew Perry was on 'Celebrity Poker Showdown'. So I watched it to see if he would make any of his usual wise cracks, which he did of course, but I also picked up the game that is texas hold em.

I had a friend that I worked with who invited me to his home game about four years ago. He said they were playing No Limit Texas Hold Em freezouts with $10 buy ins. I didn't know what any of that meant. He then went on to tell me that his wife would be cooking for the guys and that he had just gotten a big bag of some REALLY good weed. All of a sudden, everything made sense. That was my introduction to the game.

....

me and a couple of my friends seen rounders and decided we'd learn how to play and started having 2 dollar tournaments each night for weeks...it was fun and exciting when you got those crazy match ups against your friends and you get to learn how to bluff and play certain hands and position when you're playing such low pots...

rounders and shade really influenced me as far as movies...

and then i started playing at truepoker and now pokerstars...

...still willing to be humbled and to stay a student of this crazy a ss card game lol....i learn something new everyday it seems like...

no wonder it's the cadillac of poker!!

I remember watching the 2002 WSOP on ESPN and not knowing what the heck was going on. By 2003, I understood how to play Texas Hold'em, but didn't know a lot of strategy. I've mainly just learned through experience. Nothing can beat hours at the table, playing with a variety of types of players.

I started watching the 2003 W.S.O.P. on ESPN (rooting for Moneymaker) and finally got high speed internet so I decided to download Party Poker and give it a shot. I learned there and against friends at small home games. Watching t.v has given me the most insight into what's a good hand and what to throw away.

My dad. Started playing cards and betting on horses and greyhounds when I was about 7 or 8. By the time i was 12 I had a casino I ran out of my bedroom. LOL Had blackjack, roulette, craps, poker, and 5 card higher/lower. Not bad for 12 huh LOL. Played home games of 7 card stud when I was a teenager. And the rest as they say is history.

My brother-in-law taught me and my wife how to play Holdem a couple of years ago. We used to play it 4 handed over at the in laws house then we started playing 4 person tourneys for a $5 buy-in and I have been playing Holdem online for about a year now.

I wanted to see how good a player Ben Affleck was during that whole Bennifer saga lol....I flicked on Celebrity Poker Showdown and said to myself these people are horrible. THen I caught the 2003 WSOP reruns and said to myself. I can do that. Mind you I knew nothing about poker really except for having played strip poker in college while drinking!! I used to play a bit of pinochle in my twenties with and old boyfriends family and was pretty good at that. Hadnt played any card games in years though.

Bought some books, dealt myself out a bunch of hands, studied the game from WPT and WSOP reruns.. Started play money play last August, real money play in September on Party poker (cashing in first tourney).. Since then I have won 5 tournies including a leg of the Online Poker Tour and a Ladies Night on Poker Host and lots of final tables and cashes largely in freerolls or $5.50 MTT's. Slowly building a bankroll with minimum investment...

Yesterday was my 6th month anniversary as a CardPlayer.. I love the competition and the game...

LOL would you believe from a teacher in high school?

I guess the world was a different place *mumble mumble* years ago..

I learned to play at a weekly nickle/dime/quarter 3 raise limit game held at my fencing coach's house during high school. My parents wanted me to get out of the house more and would stake me $25 and buy me a six pack of beer and send me off to learn the ways of cards LOL yeah, I had interesting parents.

Anyways, that was oh... a long long time ago, and poker's been a part of my life ever since.

I learned how to play at the gold dust in deadwood, sd. I had a hundred dollars and sat down and decided to play in a 4-8 game. I won over a six hundred that night off of blind luck because I didn't really know what I was doing and the rest is kinda history on it but Ive done lots of reading and playing since that night.
