I learnt to play at home with my parents and have been playing since, but I have only just learnt about online poker and it is different.
I agree with Pat just playing is better then reading in theroy there tips/hints work sometimes but then it depends on who you are playing.

I have no idea when I first learned a thing or two about poker... was a kid and saw my father play a lot of different card games. Didn't really find a love for it until I played a few times with my drunken friends somewhere in my 20's... of course there were no strict rules at those tables. I got bored one night and wanted to play some poker and joined up with BetZip been sorta addicted to poker ever since.

Started watching my kids (Well they were 19 and up by that time) who were playing on line and with their friends at our place -- looked like fun -- i was used to playing solitare and it was getting pretty lonely -- when kids were young once played a video game and because i liked it too much -- swore off them -- refused to play because with young ones time was needed other places -- kids older now so when started on-line play money had great fun ... sent in some money ... of course lost it ... now trying to build a bank roll with freerolls .. learn alot reading articles on this site

Thanks for being here !!! Goal one day to be knowledgeable enough to enter a casino tourney

As with many I suspect, my first exposure to NL Hold'em was on ESPN (WSOP) , then I saw the TV ads by PokerStars , signed up on play money , progressed to real money ....the rest is too painful to tell ....

Celebrity Poker Showdown...

...is where I learned the basics. Then a friend sent me a link to the MBL WSOP site. Played there for a while and worked out some of the kinks. Started reading books and watching the WPT. Moved to Bodog to learn ring games. Joined a play for points poker league so I get lots of table time with out risking any money.

My Boyfriend i is OBSESSED with poker. It's like a sickness really. So I decided instead of sitting there listening to him talk about poker all day any nothing else, it would be something fun we could do together. I've only been playing about 7 or 8 months and my records better than his lol

I never learned to play

I started playing freerolls and play money at Poker Stars (still do)
Then started freerolls at other sites (FTP, Bodog, Carbon)
By the way, if you haven't tried carbon - I would definitely recommend.
Then small cash games and tourneys at local indian casinos.
Then Vegas baby, turneys at Caesars, Mirage, wherever ....
But I haven't sat at any larger cash games in Vegas yet becuase, I do know my present limitations, and I say I've never "learned" to play because that implies a complete task, and you never stop LEARNING in this game. It ain't checkers, man .....

Where did you learn to play?

I first learned playing STUD with my family. Then I found online poker.... Omaha... and liked that better than Stud. I'm not a great player. I just love the game of Poker.

I learnt the basics of poker from Free Texas Holdem Poker Online at HoldemPoker.com (now part of Online Poker - Play Free Poker Games (Texas Hold'em etc) at PokerRoom.com i think) then i went on to buy Harrington on Hold'em expert strategy for No-Limit Tournaments volume 1 and 2. Not a easy read however very good and i would definatly reccommend it. I personally had to read each book 4 -5 times before i understood it all but its well worth the time. My game dramatically improved after reading his books.

I started off playing cards with my Grandmother...Crazy 8's, Hearts, Go Fish....and Checkers and Parcheesi... my grandmother was an incredible mathematician and card player - there were actually games I wasn't allowed to play with her at all... She was red-listed from the Casinos in Vegas for counting cards in Blackjack in 1975 on her 75th birthday.

Later on, I got a game for Christmas by Mattel called a "Merlin" it played simple games and one of them was Blackjack, I also played a ton of pinball in the 70's and that was my first taste of playing a game for money. I learned poker later on, it fascinated me because of the hands and the bluffing involved. I played a little against friends for cookies...

I started online a few months ago and had a taste of success, but I failed almost equal to how often I won, so I searched out more information, Gus Hansen's video series gave me some aid and some encouraging thoughts from Chris Ferguson - all of which I found online and I have been growing in consistency ever since... I was naturally a good 'reader' since all the time playing with my Grandma (she was my toughest competitors), but it just would get so complex because I wouldn't understand kickers and would get riled up and just tilt easily at times when if I pulled back I could have made the money or even Final Tables... I play Full Tilt constantly, it's the perfect site in my eyes, though I like Absolute as well...
