I learned to play through freerolls, ebooks, paperback strategy books, magazine articles, live tournaments and sitting at my card table nightly with my little brother. Who I own everytime we play incidentally.

PokerStarsPokerStars is one of the best sites to play online poker. They accept US players & using PokerStars marketing code CARDSCHAT you get a $75 bonus.

PPParty Poker is probably the best known online poker room. Use the Party Poker bonus code CC500 for a 100% upto $500 deposit bonus.

I learned the hard way at pacific poker. Lower limit cash games. I didnt even know hand rankings and kept getting str8s and flushes mixed as to thier rankings. I played allmost every hand to see the flop, if it hit something i held the hand, lol. I used to play in thier casino and when they opened the poker room i went there instead. I still dont see why a flush out ranks a str8 though, seems flushes are so much easier to hit and make.

I learned to play online with a little backseat driving from my son. Never played live so all the comments on the difference i dont get. I have only played at full tilt. Any recommendations on better sites to play at? I do like ftp but i hear lots of comments its not, but they are usually from a person that is mad the way the cards fell. So i take it with a grain of salt.

After watching the 2003 WSOP on ESPN, I saw an ad for UltimateBet.com, Started there by playing with play money in the ring ("cash") games for couple of months. Lost interest after a while, still not knowing how to play except for the tidbits of advice that pop up on the screen during WPT events, and just listening to the announcers on Poker TV shows in general. Then a friend of mine told me about ESPN Poker Club, a free site (it's hidden away under the 'Fantasy Games' tab on espn.com) There they have 10 person Single Table Tournaments, 150 player Multi-Table Tournaments, a Daily Big Play (up to 1500 players) all which earn you points to get into a Sunday Qualifier. They have 7 week promotions, you qualify for the Final Tournament of the Promo by placing in the Top 25 of one of the three SQ's each week. The play is really good for a free site. The only live experience I have is at the local sports bar, where there are aprrox 50 players each week, no buy-in (illegal in PA) top prize of $50, start with 1500 chips, blinds 25/50, they double every 20 mins. Reading Dan Harrington's books Harrington on Hold Em Vol.1 & 2 really helps if all you see are Final Tables on TV.

Where I leaned to play: ESPN.com - Welcome To The ESPN Poker Club

i was taught the ineffable art of poker in the desolate mountains of the old country. as i stood there, looking over the horizon, i saw aces in the sky, this was a sign....i was to become a poker player. i took a deck and kidnapped a local and forced him into hours of strenuous poker playing. after 3 days, he died from the pressure "poker" exerted on him. from his death i learned a valuable lesson, poker is only for the strong..i then proceeded to Las Vegas where i met Chris Ferguson, i found out his room number and once he was asleep snuck into his room and stole a strand of his hair. i used this hair to creat a potion to make me an amazing poker player.
thats how i learned the game.

definately playing for real is the way to go, people at play tables are too loose. Start small but play your chips as if they were really larger than they are.

I learned to play at Cornell, where my friends and I would use beer as our chips. We were all very poor. You would bet by pouring beer into the cup in the middle (a true "pot"). Whoever won the hand got to drink.

I learned during the summer. I was watching poker on TV, I had never seen it before. It looked cool. I was talking to a friend, and he asked whether i had a Ultimate Bet account. I didn't, so i made one and began playing with play money and freerolls. I got into it, and ended up playing a lot, winning some money, depositing, and watching more programs on TV like: Poker After Dark, High Stakes Poker, and the Poker Dome Challenge. I'm very glad I got to learn how to play, it's been a lot of fun and I enjoy poker so much.

I started to read through this thread, but after a few pages I started feeling really old.

I learned poker from my dad in the late '60s, early '70s. Played occaisionally with friends in high school (late '70s) and regularly in college (early '80s). Picked the game back up seriously about 6 months ago. With all the information on the internet though, I think I've learned more in the past two months than the previous 30 years.

In the military, in between ops, better than yuker [or whatever that game was!]. Many times we had to play for rounds rather than money, since much of the time we only had what was in our survival packs. We used 5.56mm[$0.05], 7.62mm[$0.10], .45cal[$0.25], 9mm[$0.50], .302[$1], and sometimes .50cal[$5] rounds as chips. Obviously not high stakes poker! Needless to say, splashing the pot or tossing your rounds in was not a good idea! But, we never had an incident, and it did pass the time while waiting for another op.

Home Games!!!

I learned to play with my dad and grandfather and went from there. I am a live game player. Better when I have the luxury of my opponent in front of me to give tells. I also, go to the casino for small buy-in tourneys and have done well so far. These internet games are taking a little more patience. Internet players are a different breed.

I was watching the Aruba Classic on TV one day and saw an ad for Ultimate Bet, I really didn't pay to much attention, then I was watching another poker event, I believe it was the WSOP and saw another ad, this time for Bodog. I decided to grab my laptop and download the software and haven't stopped playing since.

Learning about Poker

I started playing cards as a child, and advanced to poker when I was old enough my parents would let me play for matches, lol. Have just evolved into playing holdem as I enjoy the challenge of the game. I love playing tournaments, and while I am still not a strong player, enjoy it with my family, who also play.

Learning to play poker

I learned how to play poker, from my ex-boy. That is the only thing he did good for me.haha. I we play all the time, online, and with his friends. After a few weeks of just playing I got really good at it and I was always betting him and lasting longer on the tables and winning more money. That made him mad..

So I learned who to play by watching and just playing it. Now I love Holdem and try to get all my friends to play...
