As with a lot of people over the past few years I started playing poker after watching Moneymaker win the World Series in 2003. After that I began to play hold em on some casino software that my computer came with. Playing a computer wasn't too much fun. I played with play money at Party Poker for a while and found that even though the commercials say it is a great way to learn the game, most of the players would play like morons. I signed up at Paradise to try the million dollar freeroll and liked what I saw. It turned out to be great site then I just started downloading other popular rooms. I've built a decent bankroll from some freeroll winnings and also make deposits from time to time. Since I just do this for the fun, not to make a living, I am a low limit player

playing with friends

i learned poker playing with friends for years, and gradually after trying many types of poker we, like most people settled on playing texas holdem, it seems to be the game that lets you know the most about what possible hands you could be up against.

I learned from the 5/10 play money tables at Pokerstars and from some buddies who taught me the game. I already knew the rankings of hands just needed some touch ups

I think I mainly learned as I was growing up, we had alot of family poker nights. Although we played 5 stud or 7 stud- that's where I learned the basics.

nice thread

like many other people, i learned to play poker with my family when i was younger. i was probably about 10 years old. my cousin and i are the same age, and we used to get a real kick out of playing cards for money, even if it was just nickels and dimes. we would usually play at my gram's house with aunts and uncles. it actually brings back a lot of really great memories to think about it and write it down. . .

anyhow, we mostly played 5 card draw and 7 card stud. i had never played hold 'em until about a year ago, and that has been mostly online. hopefully, what i learned as a kid will help me win now. if not, i'll just blame it on my crazy family. . .

I started playing online poker at Party Poker. I played about a year just with a play money account there. Since I have branched out to real money and that's about all I will play now, but I don't play real on Party Poker.

i first learned from my uncle who visted from the states last year. he tought me the rules and fundermentals, then started playing £20 games down the local and started winning money. then i made the transfer to the net where unlike most i kicked off on $30 sit & gos on poker heaven where i started to build up a bankroll. then i heard about pokerstars which is a much bigger site so more players which means more games then made the transfer to cash games at 50c/$1 level which i find u can make more money quicker. and thats my year long jouney, (oh and i read about 5 books, supersystem being my favourite but soon be startin on harringtons books)

I learned from friends playing home games. Then I started playing freerolls online and I loved it so I have deposited money in a few online poker sites. I only play cheap sit n go's or low limit games.

I learned to play by playing with friends. Then I watched a friend play online poker so I started playing with play chips to help me learn and get experience. I have since then played with real money but I online play micro tables, low cost SnG's, and freerolls. Until I get alot more practice, I don't want to play with real money to much. I did do well last week I deposited $25 and decided to take a chance so I played a $5 tourney I think it was anyway I ended up with $119. I thought that was pretty good since it was the first tourney I entered that cost more than $1 or $2. Right now I have decided to play with just play chips and freerolls and see how things go.
Have a Good Day & Good Luck!

I learned in play money on pokerstars, decided to try some real money and quickly realised i knew nothing, eventually found that my best game was sit and go's (I was till pretty rubbish) and found the best improvement has come from watching PNL everynight for 4 hours, and reading Sklansky and Harrington. But i suppose the best education was playing alot and losing time and time again, only now am i finding out from my many mistakes how to actually start winning. (sometimes )

I started playing around 2001, we always played poker (started in middle school) but as far as holdem was concerned not untill a couple of years ago, and it was strictly house games , untill I turned 21 of course. LOL

I actually learned from the same tutorial at holdempoker.com as the first poster. I liked that site a long time ago when I was playing for play money.

I was pretty inspired by Moneymaker my sophomore year in college. ESPN really dragged it out and it caught on eventually...as I hadn't played anything besides draw and stud. There's no looking back now as I'm hooked since then.

I picked the game up after...of course, Rounders. But didn't really get into it until after watching parts of the 2002 WSOP at a buddies on his PC. We both got hooked and the rest was history. We figured if Varkonyi could do it, who couldn't. I loved seeing him bust out so quickly after getting AA twice in the first hands. It was even better watching him go out before his wife the next year.

I learned

I learned as a child my dad would play with me and my brother for chores. I learned real quick cause I hated to wash dishes. LOL. But then as I got a little older 13 or 14 my dad had weekend poker parties every weekend that lasted all day and night. So when he got tired of playing he would leave me up playing with his money and freinds.

About a month ago someone (a member here) asked me to play some poker, just for fun. After a couple of hands and I really seemed to enjoy it. I was spending hours on the game the next day. Later he told me to check out this website to improve my game. I guess it's this website where I am still learning to play poker.

As I have only played in playmoney games and freerolls (yes, I won $2.75) there is still a lot to discover!

First learned to play in a home game with my brother and his friends. But I really honed my tourney skills playing with my friends at first, as I domainted whenever we ran MTT for $20 buyin. Then my skills really sharpened in the RVP freerolls, despite the donkey factor, I really learned how to play well, value bets, slowplaying, bluffs, etc.
