What kind of tournaments to play?

I was almost all exclusive to ring games but I have started to fall in love with the fun that trnys bring . I wanted to know what kind of trnys you guys preferred . Is it the SnGs (1 table), MTTs with about 5 tables or do you like the big ones that pay in the thousands and you have to beat like 2k opponents?What do you guys think its more profitable? Thanks.

i play a lot of heads up games - i find 1 on 1 play is quite profitable

I've been trying the SNG challenge that a few of the members have been trying and I must say that the 9 player 1 table SNG's have been very profitable for me since I started playing them almost exclusively. I've played in all types of game and find cash games to be very irratating, large MTT very hard to final table (which is where you need to place to make it worth playing in)

MTT SNG's can be profitable but you need a bit of luck to get a good pay out.

Single table SNG's suit my game well and up to now have been the most profitable for me.

I stay away from tournaments because as hard as I try, there just a waste of time for me. I always seem to last till the money but once I hit it I can never turn the corner and get the big money. I've made 3 or so ft's on pokerstars but or the most part even when I get there I don't get a good return.

Sngs on the other hand have been very profitable for me on party. I play limit he ones and most players have no clue about position etc. which leads to some awful suckouts but for the most part it's easy as pie to place often.

Well for all the tournaments that I played , I have ended up in the money a few times (2x I won) but I am not sure if I been there enough to make a profit. The thing is that you need luck as much as you need skill , which is why I still favorite ring games. I cant believe how many people hate ring games, maybe is the pain when you go all in and lose alot of money. I am reading Harrington's books so I will keep trying these trnys .

Please explain this further? I used to be primarily a ring game player but I actually enjoy sng's more. I feel like it's much more skill in them than a ring game. The primary reason is because you all begin with the same chip count. In a ring game, you can find a big stack that likes to bully around a player who enters with the minimum.

While you do begin with the same count in SnGs , I dont think that matters much. Alot of times you dont get any cards to play with and then the blinds eat you up until you are force to go all in , only to be beaten by a worst hand and lose time and your money in 1 play. Last night I was at this SnG 1 table and didnt get anything to play until late when I had no choice but to go all in with my AJs ,the guy had KQ and the board gave me 2 pair but it gave him 4 to a flush , RIDICULOUS! I am just saying that luck is bigger factor in trnys because you have to outlast several people. With ring games , you can wait all day until you see the opportunity to get your money. Look I am trying to give trnys a chance but theres no denying that ring games is my bread and butter.

Also want to respond and to your comment about bullying someone witha small stack at a ring game. Thats not neccesarily true because I used to be teh one with the small stack (on purpose) and wait for someone to push me when I have a good holding and then going all in , they would think like ' what the hell is not much compare to my stack ' . Thats how I use to double up quick , I have to try that again sometime.

big field tournies all the way for me. you have to be prepaired to play lots and lots of them to turn a profit, though, but when they pay off, they pay off big. I'd go months with little more then just making the money, but just recently i've had 3 final tables in as many weeks. you also have to be prepaired to spend four to six hours at least playing them, which isn't for everybody. it's all a matter of personal preference, really. whatever you feel the most comfortable with.

I used to play mostly big trnys but I dont play as many because its so hard to make it and there's where you need alot of luck. If I remember correctly I won 1 and made a final table about 2x more , and yes they do take long . Now I will only play those if I have a shot of making a few thousand , I could care less about winning $100 .

i play a few of the guaranteed on pokerstars and some of the rebuys

I play all three types of game. They each require a different approach and that helps to keep the game interesting and helps me keep learning and improving.

I tend to spend about a week playing ring games then, when I get tired of that, a week in STTs, and so on.

I play an MTT most days and I`ve had some success, but they do demand huge time and patience for (usually) small rewards. Best regarded as a bit of relaxation and a change of pace.
