This story just goes to show....

On most of the forums that I am a member of I share this story, because it is quite unique. I usually get a big poster turnout with questions and comments, and I hope the same is said for this site! Well here it is:

I am not to experienced when it comes to live table play and I dont really play that often on live tables, so this story I heard by word of mouth, some maybe "embelished", but most of it is true. So the story goes like this.

There was a young poker player who had just joined a $2-$4 pot limit table at the local Indian Casino. He was eager and wanted to hit big money, so he sat down with $350 in hopes that he would hit some good hands. Now, in order to fully comprehend the story you must know what a BAD BEAT JACKPOT is, and in my efforts to make the story easy to understand I will give the dictionary definition. A bad beat jackpot is a cash jackpot offered by most casinos when a very good hand loses to a better one. In this case the hands are a ROYAL FLUSH vs. 4 OF A KIND.

So back to the story, anyways, the young player is playing, making some hands and winning some money. He's up to about $500 now, after about only 45 minutes to and hour worth of playing. He thinks he is doing good and is about ready to stand up. So on his last hand he has AQ of hearts and raises as much as he can to $6. Everyone folds except for the big blind who just calls. The board is 2 Diamonds 2 Spades 10 Hearts. Both players check. The turn is J hearts. By now, the young player is getting very apprehensive and nervous. The other player (unidentified) bets $14, equilivent to the pot at the time. The young player calls, and hopes for the best. After about 5 seconds and almost wetting himself, sure enough the K of hearts hits on the river, like a 1 in 1 million chance! So, it seems that by looking very nervous might have payed off, because the other player bets $42, the young player raises, for $84 and the other player calls. Currently, the progressive bad beat jackpot was 25 K, and the young player shows his Royal Flush of hearts, the other shows his Four of a kind (deuces). After winning the pot, the dealer sends the young player to the casino manager to collect his "winnings". By now the player is so happy he is about to jump for joy.

He knew he hit the jackpot and couldnt wait to collect the winnings. When he steps into the managers office the money is ready and he can see it waiting. The only thing that the casino manager ask's the young player for is his ID, to verify legal US residency and the proper age to collect the winnings. To play at the casino you had to be 21, and the young player began to rifle through his pocket to get his ID out. When he finally got it, they examined it. Turned it over and it looked to be good, it said he was 22, perfectly within the playing age. As the casino manager went to hand the ID back to the now over joyed young poker player, he noticed something he had never noticed in an ID before. There was a little bump over were the birthdate is put. He quickly removed the ID from the young players hand and examined it again. Now, not only could he see it, he could FEEL it. He knew something was fishy and he seperated the lamanation of the ID to better inspect. After futher investigation, he notice that the young player was VERY YOUNG indeed. After seperating the lamanation he noticed that the young player had put a new birthdate over the old one, which is what mad the bump in the ID. It turns out the young player was only 19!

Not only did they take all of his money, but they also had him arrested for impersonating an older person and making a fake ID.

THIS STORY just goes to show that it is never good to cheat, cause you most likely will be caught! I hope everyone learned a lesson!

Well, the winner of the hand still gets a large portion of that jackpot. I think it's usually customary that the sufferer of the bad beat get 50%, the winner get 25% and the rest split among the table.

The jacks and up thing is most common, as far as I know, but I've heard of it before where they utilize any four of a kind.

Wow. That's one hell of the story. Amazing how you can feel like you're on top of the world at one second and then it all just comes crashing down the next second. I wonder what happened to that kid. Do you know what happened with him in court by chance?

You know what? A friend of mine had pretty much the same thing happen to him a few years ago when he hit a slots jackpot for 45K. After the management found out he was not the person his ID said he was they witheld the prize money and luckily let him go, except for being banned from the casino.
