Question about bankroll management

Ok, lets say that you are playing at 10NL and get tired of it, and want to move up to 25NL, but are not properly rolled to buy in for the full amount. Would it be alright to buy into the same game with a smaller amount of money, say $15, which you would be properly rolled to spend? Or is this still against the rules?

There are no *rules,* just guidelines. Generally it's a bad idea to play X-limit without Y-bankroll to back you up in case you have a down slide.

If you're fine with redepositing, or if the fun/excitement is worth the price of losing, then moving up isn't a big deal.

I moved up to 25NL when I was under-rolled, but I made a deal with myself to move back down if I lost two buy-ins. That never happened, so I've remained there.

As for buying in with just $15, that's fine. If you had less, just buying in for $10 isn't terrible either.

You'll find that there isn't much difference in play between the 10NL and 25NL tables.

yeah don't do like me i had to learn my lesson the hard way. I was up a pretty good bit in my bankroll and started playing way over my limit. I took a downslide, which wouldn't have hurt me had i been playing in the correct limit talbes, but i wasn't so i just kept buying in and before you know it i had almost lost all my bankroll. Now i'm trying to build it back up.

I just always make a progressive move up. I don't play more than I can afford until I can afford it. Ya know what I mean?

Yeah, I was just curious if this would be a stupid move to make or not, becasue when I deposit, I will be in between the games and I dont like the 10NL, but I will play that if its stupid to play 25NL buying in with $15

I'd just stick with the 10NL for a while longer... that's just me though. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Well I got a little bit to make a decision, I'm going for a 300 deposit when I get the chance though. In the mean time, its back to freerolls and reading up on my game

if you feel comfortable playin short stack then go ahead, personally, i would not feel comfortable playing in a game where my bankroll was not sufficient, but thats just me

In the long run, stick to strict bankroll management, and it'll be to your benefit. Bying short into nl games is generally not a good prctice.

These are not hard and fast "rules", but I think the savviest cash game players I know are in general agreement that grinding your way up is the best way to get there.

^^^Exactly the reply I was looking for! Thank you too! I probably wont be playing much cash at the start, mostly sng's and mtt's. I will start playing some cash after I build a roll big enough to play higher than 10NL, which would be around $500

Out of curiosity, if I decide to make 1 last deposit (still gotta figure out a site.. PokerStars seems to be getting as bad as FT) of say.. $45 (give or take $5)

What limit should I start grinding at? .01/.02? (ugh) or what?

If you want to follow really strict BR management then yeah you should start at .01/.02, then when you reach $100 you can move up to .02/.05. Then at $200, .05/.10. It can take a while but while you are building it all up you will learn a lot about the game so when you finally get to reasonable levels you won't get run over.
