Playing in a charity tournament
My work is holding a charity tourney ($20 buyin, $10 to the charity and $10 to the prize pool) next week.
I'm expecting the level of play to be really wide, from some who barely understand the rules, to those who play home games, to those who play regularly. I guess the first thing to do will be to categorize the players into these kind of general categories. Things to take advantage of: - beginners who are calling stations or afraid to bet/call. - players who overvalue or undervalue their hands Things to watch out for: - beginners who call rather than betting/raising with monster hands - people will not understand pot odds, so they might chase with overcards, gut shots or small pairs. That in itself is not a problem, except when they hit on the river. - position will mean nothing to a lot of them, so UTG raises might not mean what an UTG raise should mean, but, if I raise UTG it's not going to get the respect that it should either - people will probably call raises preflop with Ace rag, any combination of face cards, or any combination of soooted cards - people who play a bit, and who think slowplaying is greatest thing since sliced bread I think there is going to be a rebuy period, so I'm planning to play loose/aggressive early trying to build a stack or bust, until I either have a stack or it starts to get close to the end of the rebuy period. Any other suggestions? ![]() |

The only reason for LAG at the start until the rebuy is to take shots at building a stack early.
If that fails, either due to cards or TAG players, then I'd try to get busted, rebuy, then switch to TAG. I figure if I start TAG right at the start, I may get situations to build my stack, but I may not. If I don't, I'd rather be low stacked enough to bust and rebuy rather than try to survive past the rebuy period with a little less than what I sat down with. I think it's only rebuy; not add-on. In other words, I'd be starting LAG just to see more flops and have more opportunities to build a stack. If I get a stack, or bust and rebuy, then I switch to TAG. I plan on TAG almost all of the tourney, just not at the opening while the rebuy is available. |
