Omaha

I was playing a freeroll Omaha and I noticed that hands such as three of a kind and straights are not as valuable as they are in Texas Hold 'em. I lost very early in the freeroll becuase I went all in with the highest straight. The player that beat me had a flush. He had four of the samke suit in his hand! I don't play Omaha that often so maybe it was just a bad beat or you have to approach it differently. Any thoughts?

In Omaha you have to use 2 cards from your 4 card hand and 3 cards from the board. Since u get 4 cards to choose from in your starting hand what you just said is correct, what would otherwise be a good hand in a normal holdem game will not be as strong in omaha. Just be more cautious with your chips and be sure there are no suits on the board to make a flush if u have to bet heavily on a straight. To be honest I find omaha to be much simpler compared to holdem, except sometimes it gets confusing to determine the best hand cause everyone has so many cards. The guy that beat you couldnt use all the cards in his hand, so he only used 2 and ill bet there are 3 of the same from the board. Calling in with all cards of the same suit is not a good idea in omaha cause it lessens your chances of getting a flush on the board.

they call omaha the game of redraws and for good reason
if you flop a high straight, most probably by the river or even turn card, your hand will mean nothing
you also have to keep in mind (as devil said ^^^) that if there are three of a suit on the board then probably 90% of the time, someone will have a flush whether its high or low
also if there is a pair on the board, expect a boat alot of the time too

usually if i flop a nice hand, i either try to scare off the other players, or even fold if people are betting on draws
but then again i really am not even an amateur i dont even know if you should be listening to me

re: Omaha poker

Omaha is my favorite. I play hold'em because with the current wave of popularity, it is easier to pay the bills. Omaha is interesting because you can hold the nuts, be drawing to the nuts, and be drawing dead...at the exact same time! lol (its true)

In Omaha always H/L Split, always go for the sweep.
Much stronger hands are required.
If you cna see it on the board, someone's probably got it.

LOL very funny Diablo....What are you eluding to?

Winning Omaha/8 Poker- by Mark Tenner & Lou Krieger
is one of the definitive works, but in my humble opinion it's the right book for most. Diablo you know what I believe is the definitive work, if your ever in vegas, do you promise to pm me so we can hang out?

One other tip for Omaha and how it differs from Hold'em.
Many holdem players, play two holdem hands with their four card starting value.
Instead, try to visualize 6 hands.
All four cards must work together in some way.

Diablo, one more thing. Am I becoming annoying?

I just bought hilo split by raysee and it has how to play omaha8 and stud8 in it

There aren't many books about regarding PLO though.

If you are looking then get super system 2 it has a selection of games in it and has a PLO section that on first glance looks quite good.

re: Omaha poker

I love Omaha High, not to big on H/L (just a personal preference)

Premium starting hands in Omaha are a different type than in Holdem.

Example AsAdQsKd would be a great starting hand, have the top pair and double suited. Rareley do you want to play a hand if you are holding four hearts as two of them are no good, unless they were connected.

Omaha is for sure a river game, playing connected cards and pairs with connectors around them are what to look for. Also in Omaha people dont realize that just because you flop the top set does not mean you are neccessarily favored to win.

say you have 10s 10d Js 4h, flop comes 10h 7h Ad, you have the best hand, but if someone is holding say 8c 9h Jh Qc, they are favored to win the hand over you since they have the flush draw and an open ended str8 draw on both ends. Hard to play the draw since Holdem teaches everyone that is the wrong play, but Omaha is a different monster.
