Kind of a rookie question I play A few local Hold'em games a week in New Hampshire, When I am at the games i noticed Hold'em is the only game most of the players know or play. I treat poker as if it were a buisiness "Find your niche" Mine seems to be Hold'em I have only been playing poker for a few years and consider my self a fairly good player but still on the rookie end. My question; is it better to find one game that you are good at like hold'em or is it better to dive in to a few diffirent styles ie Omaha, Stud, Black Jack ext.? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Forner

I disagree I have been learning to play the 8's or better games (pot limit omaha 8 is proving costly though) It gets really boring just playing the same game all the time, variety is the spice of life and there are always micro limit/play money tables to learn how to play on. We will be running different game freerolls at somepoint, which in turn will lead to a HORSE tournament. Thats a mix of Holdem Omaha Razz Stud and Stud8. So getting some experience under your belt will make things more fun and then if the others where you are start playing any other variation, then you will have a nice head start on them ;]

I think if you are just doing it for pleasure stick to what you know but holdem doesn't take quite as much skill as some of the other games. But I tend to stay away from house games such as blackjack or 3 card poker because you are relying on way to much luck to carry you. I know how to play most poker games but usally stick to omaha or holdem because the other games dont get near as much action as those 2.

i've played omaha, and omaha is as much luck as anything. Especially omaha hi-lo. Hold em seems to allow more room for bluffing, which is why i prefer it over omaha. I'd stick to one of them. If you get bored like dook says, then you may wanna try other things. But if your that good that you've mastered hold em (which is quite impossible), then i dont know why you'd stop playing it since you could make tonnes of money. |

omaha8 and stud8 are better known as hilo techincally the full name is "omaha hilo 8's or better" if you get in the habit of calling them stud8 then its easier to remmeber what the E part of HORSE events is ;] It also has the side effect of remembering what to look out for when you are trying to make a low hand.

re: Kind of a rookie question poker I would say play more than one type of game to increase oppourtunity to play and just to keep it interesting. Suppose there is a table full of donkey's playing seven stud one night, why not capitalize on this rather than playing the harder to beat holdem game that night. Also some games are not known very well like omaha and omaha 8ob. Playing a solid strategy in these games can be very profitable. Just sit down and watch an omaha 8ob tourney, not many players actually know what is going on.

re: Kind of a rookie question poker I have read in a book that it is good to play multiple types of poker games to improve your poker skill, but i dont know if the book is right. I think (like a person posted earlier) that it would be pricy. Why not just learn the game you're going to play and master. I guess it is up to how big your bankroll is, but I dont know. Just my 2 cents

I started by playing NL Hold 'Em tourneys, but I would consider myself a better Limit Hold 'Em and Stud8 player. And because I am better at those games, I usually have alot more confidence in sitting down at a ring game and playing them than I would a NL ring game.

Playing the same game all the time may or may not be benifical to your skills. But i have found that limit Omaha HI/LO and stud8 will give you a good arena to hone your skills at how different players play the same hand. I could be dead wrong but i think that playing different games and different limits, you cant imagin the stress involved in a 2/4 cent holdem table, has made me a better player.
