Improving your MTT Play

So currently im reading Phil Gordons blue book and harrington on holdem volume 2. Im pretty sure this is one of the best ways to improve your MTT play. Anyone have any other suggestions?

The best way to learn is experience. So, just go play some MTTS.

IMO, the best way to learn is to employ a combination of things. You need to read, you need to play, you need to review/study your results to see what you're doing right and wrong, and you need to keep highly detailed records.

you just need to go all in every hand until you win!!!!

kidding of course, JD is completely right here there is no one way to win, read, study, read the posts on forum. Start playing them and post your hands and we would be happy to tell you where you are screwing up.

As to the playing part and getting experience, what level of MTT's do you suggest that one should start out at? I've played in freerolls, both public and on other forums, and even though I've won money and even won one, I don't see much benefit in freerolls. To much counter productive activity going on to be of any long term benefit, in my opinion. I currently play $5 and $10 S&G's, so should I "practice" in MTT's with buy-in's of less than $5, or $5 to $10 dollars. Where will my money give me the best value for learning hot to play MTT's and gain experience? Not to mention the outside possibility of making it ITM!

that all depends on your bankroll and where you feel comfortable, that we can not answer for you.

I'm currently playing multiple $5 & $10 S&G's a day. So, I'm comfortable there. But, I'm moving up a level, in fact I just played in 4 $20 S&G's in the last 2 days. I have $287.34 at Absolute after yesterday's withdrawal, $123.86 at Poker Stars [all free roll winnings], $41.52 at Full Tilt [I'm jinxed on this site!], and $34.88 at Wingows [don't ask!]. I didn't mention that I have played in a couple of $1 buy-in MTT's, and I found them to be not much better than a freeroll, so I'm not really interested in playing in anymore of them. So, with that in mind, I'm thinking that I should probably stay near the $5 level, until I get more experience, and start making it deeper into the MTT's and ITM. I'm hoping to find a level where I get the value of learning how to play better poker in MTT's and experience, without a lot of the ridiculous action you see in freerolls [I know you can't eliminate it, but I'd like play were there's more poker than slots, lottery, or bingo]. Will I find that at $5 - $10 level, which I feel comfortable with, or will I have to wait until I'm comfortable at $20 S&G's?

you are going to find good players in all buy in levels in any tourney regardless of the buy-in. I consider myself a above average tourney player and I enjoy playing 6-8 tourneys at once and they are usually lower levels like the $1 - $5 ones.

you shouldn't have a problem playing with bingo players? why would you if you can double up 1st hour then you are in terrific shape going into 2nd hour because your stack in relation to the blinds are terrific. No mater what level you play there will be bad players and that is fine because we should be looking for bad players not good ones. I understand what you are saying trust me but again it depends on your comfort level not the level of play.

The jump in tourney play happens around the $55 mark (though there are still plenty of donks there are a lot more solid players).

<$22 I've found to be much fishier than the $22 and $33s though this shouldn't be something that puts you off. You need to learn to beat the fish, they are the ones who help you build your stack in tournies even at the higher buyins.
