I threw away the chance to make the easiest $50!

Hey people! I was just playing a few SNGs at holdempoker.com, my usual hangout, and they are running this Christmas promotion thingy at the moment which I only just noticed today. The promo today was get 8888 in your hand and you can win a $50 bonus. So the cards were dealt and I had a crap pocket hand, 8To I think, so I just folded. Then the flop came, x88 and Im thinking crap, I couldve taken some people on a ride. Then the turn is... wait for it... another freaking 8. I could not believe it! I was all about to kick up a fuss and start hating myself when I realised it was okay, I still played the hand correctly and should always fold with a pile of arse like that. I may be new to this (been playing online for just two weeks) but I am finally getting the hang of it and my bankroll is actually in surplus of my original deposit.

Do you guys play as youre supposed to with regards to starting hands or do you ever think **** it, why not go for it and pray for that lucky hit?

Being that the promo was quad 8's and I had that 8 10os I would have called if not for the promo I would fold knowing that no one else at least could make the quads with me holdin one of them.

edit: did that make sense?

El,

I have to agree with Jamile on this one. I would have atleast took a shot at the flop since it had an 8 in it. It also depends on how much it would have cost me to call.

I myself "usually" play like I am supposed to butttt sometimes if I get a gut feeling on a pocket or certain cards are running really hot. I may call something off the wall and out of position. But that's just me.

I just didnt even consider the possibility of it ever happening though... and it could be expensive if I played EVERY hand that had an 8 in it even if the stakes were low. I was playing micro limit (.25/.50) by the way.

Come on folks !!! I figured that at this stage ye folks would at least know how it works. If a site offered a bonus for a boat of sevens full of twos, would you play every 7/2o. ???? Surpised at you DessertLady !

Good fold mate, now if you had 88 or even A8 pre-flop then maybe i could understand it. There is a reason that poker sites have bonuses like this. FREDDY !!!!! Do the math for me !

Fully agree ten.. the bonus thingy is just a way for you anybody to call with an 8 in thier hand. Remember though we aren't fortune tellers, if we were we'd know which hands to fold and which hands to stay in with.

Something similar happened to me at a live casino. I was on vacation and decided to play some 2-5spread limit at a casino, Since i was on vacation and would only visit this casino maybe twice a year, i did not sign up for there players card. Low and behold I make 8888 quads (first time ever live) turns out they were running a promotion about quads and full houses..didn't even know, would of made 60 bucks...LOL...

I suppose. If I had played every hand that an 8 cropped up in I might have lost my bankroll even before that 8 quads showed up...
