hi all,

has anyone else noticed this or is it just me.

when joining a new site everything is rosey for the first 1-2 weeks, bad beats mimimum, premium hands a pleanty, alls well im thinking i can make it pro again, then........

the first huge suck out hits, then another then another, then kk loses to 4-4 on the river after he's called u down, now everytime you raise you miss and your oppents keep hittinghuge hands.

sounds familiar.

i've yet to exactly get to the bottom of the internet poker mystery, the above staement has been common, on Pacific, bluesquare, virgin, Ladbrokes, bet365,.(others like fulltilt and devilfish and william hill) lost str8 away from day one without any chance of winning.)

firstly you could say "well it must be your play" becasue thats a human response, and thats fair enough secondly you could say " he's just unlucky"
it isnt my play i dont think as ive played for 5 years , read the books, and put the graft in. yet i cant hold a profit, just loss after loss after loss.

playing cash 2-1-5-10 n/l, and b4 anyone says it , i know its a game of massive luck and minimum skill.
thats my reasoning after learning the game inside out twice, i had myself convinced when i won, it was because i played exellent poker ,( and a lot of the time i did) but re thinking i know how phil ivey wins !!! he can only win the same way i can by ultimatly hitting the cards.(pure luck) then making good descisions/reads when he needs to.(pure skill)
luck 75% skill 25%.
it could be said that im wrong? but i'll bet my bottom dollar that if its a skill game, and phil ivey is more skillfull than me, and i played him heads up first to 10 games wins, i'd fancy my chances of being even with him/or a head. sounds like bullsh.it eh?, then why did they invent game theory then? because the luck element in games such as poker cancells out the skill.thats why!
any thoughts.?

Some "real" answers:

1. You may actually be playing better when you first sign up, due to simple unfamiliarity. When you first deposit on line (or even on a new site), you will naturally be paying maximum attention, and playing your best. After all, it's a new environment, and you will be:

a) paying max attention to the incoming stimulus, attempting to assimilate it,
and/or
b) wanting to succeed in your new undertaking.

This naturally leads to winning/doing well.

As you become more complacent with comfort level, your play can fall off, and without you even realizing you are not playing at the same level as when you started on 'x' site. You see this in numerous activities in life, not just poker. When I was running (oh so long ago) I would notice that a new run, in a new or unfamiliar place, would seem much easier, I would run faster, and the actual duration would just seem shorter (even if I went for a 20 min run, it would seem shorter than a 20 min run on my "home" course).

Also, how many times have you started something all "gung ho" at first, then after a certain amount of time, your level of interest declines/falls off?

2. Simple human perception. You might simply assign different weight to different stimuli over time: proportion of beats might be the same as when you started, but your mind might start to remember certain "hits" more as time goes on.

i agree with aliengenius. I went through the same thing when i first deposited. I wanted to do well right away. As time went on, my concentration fell off. I've learned to treat it the same way everytime i sit down at my computer. your going to get bad beats and people who get lucky and what not. Sometimes i get lucky and sometimes i get outdrawn. it happens. if i am not going to complain when i get lucky on someone, then i shouldn't complain when it comes back to me. If i am going to wager real money no matter what the limit is, i need to focus. that's why i prefer live play.

ty for ur thoughts everyone,

now for the proof of the pudding,

wkonevich- u say i suck, ok no probs its ur opinion and u are entitled.
i say i m a good a player as has logged on to this site.

i issue a little challenge to prove that mr wkonevich's answer has been spewed forth because it's easy to say u rubbish, than to actually think of why this maybe happening.

i'll challenge mr wkonevich to best of 10 heads up n/l holdem poker matches on the site of his choice (for reasonable stakes, so as not to alienate any opponent) say 5-10 dollar heads up games.

as a matter of principle, pls contact me tho the forum's or thro private message.

look forward to hearing from u .

OOOOUUUUUUU (dang it how do you spell the sound you make when someone calls someone out? it's also the same sound when kimmy gibler kisses a boy on full house, it's also the same sound that one makes when you see something gross)

I thought the exact same thing about 15% of the way into where I am now in poker. Afterwards, you start learning more about the game and eventually just become a solid, winning player.

1) It`s called variance.

2) I agree with AG.

3) It`s bloody stupid and childish to ask for opinions and then get moody when someone offers one.

All I have to say is, we all think we are great (well most of us anyway) just because you read and know the game well doesnt mean anything, some people just cant win no matter what happens. Only one person wins a hand (for theories sake) which means 5-8 others lose (depending on the size of the game). And if you go to a table only 3-4 (if that) will make a profit while the others will lose, not good odds for anyone but thats the way it happens.

Think of your home game with the people who have no idea how to play mixed in with those who know the game in and out. Everyone sooner or later will win and I doubt anyone has a home game they play in where they win +60% of the time or else the people wont play with you because you win all the time!

If im losing at a table I leave as Im sure most people online (good or not) do. People stay when they win or.....and heres the important part...THINK they SHOULD be winning. As a friend on this forum said , "Hands that hold up 80% of the time (like your kk vs 44) should win 100% of the time right?" And before you say he was 5% to hit blah blah blah, you got into a hand that when played through is 80/20 and like it or not they will hit 1 in every 5 times which for us seems huge but thats because we usually lose more in the 1 time he hits than we win the 4 times he doesnt.

(b) i feel that HU is not a test of pure skill

(c) you asked for honest answers, and i gave it to you
