If a player mucks then they do not have to show their cards.

If a the hand reaches showdown the last person to bet has to show first, the caller can then either show a better hand and win the pot or muck.

Other players are free to ask to see the mucked cards if they suspect collusion, however it is frowned upon as it gives away information for free and basically accuses the person of cheating.

That said, you can ask to see mucked cards at showdown. However excessive numbers of requests may incur a penalty.

Each casino is different on this rule. Some will allow another player to ask and see another players mucked hand, and some casinos will not allow the hand to be exposed. Like Stu said, it's bad 'etiquette' to ask to see a mucked hand, but some still do it.

Most casinos now follow that if the hand hits the muck it is dead and will not be exposed. Personally, I think that is how it should be. Yet, some casinos will flip over the cards when asked.

Its a standard rule

Robert's Rules

The Showdown

Quote:
The Showdown

........

5. Any player who has been dealt in may request to see any hand that was eligible to participate in the showdown, even if the opponent's hand or the winning hand has been mucked. However, this is a privilege that may be revoked if abused. If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead. If the winning player asks to see a losing player’s hand, both hands are live, and the best hand wins.

I would question how the two involved are playing "against" each other. I know I don't appreciate how acquaintances sometimes play differently against each other than they would a stranger. ie. playing soft. In this case he may ask to see the hand if it wasn't his wifes.

Rules are rules... great. I've played where 'interpretation' means at anytime if someone was dealt a hand and they want to see another hand, they can request to be shown it--even when it is already in the muck, showdown or not.

Each room is different although most won't show. Does the player look like a shmutz for asking? YES! However, shmutzes don't care because they are shmutzes. They ask anyways.

This. ^^^^

Casinos may have their own policy on the tolerance of invoking this rule, but the actual rule is as official as a flush beating a straight.

But caution is recommended. People who ask to see mucked cards in a live setting often have difficulty getting to their car or hotel room in 1 piece.
