Have you created a poker program?

I'm guessing this would go here since it's about "where you play". I was thinking the other day about a site called Limbo.com (click the unique tab, that was there 1st game), or heck even The Price is Right and thought, why can't a poker site do this as well. If you visit the site/show, they make money from advertisers, you try to bid on their product for as low as you can and if your bid is the lowest unique number, you win that prize. Since, I don't have the know how to write a program, I figured I'd throw it out here and see if another CC'er can become rich and famous from it. My thought is, what if you had a site that was strictly free rolls? You could probably have several smaller tournies during the week giving away gift cards, dig. cam's, TV's... things like that and then have a larger tourney on the weekend during "prime time" for the flat panel tv's<. The smaller daily tournies could offer points which could be used (as you see on limbo) to buy cheapy stuff (downloads, shirts...).

With a system like this, I would think it should be legal everywhere since there's no entry fee and everyone has an equal opportunity to win and lose without (them) spending a dime. As for site quality, heck start off with a cheap model program since it's all freerolls. You see how quick the freerolls fill up on most sites when the top prize is $100, can you imagine the advertising real estate for a $500 top prize and some $5 - $20 gift cards to the next 10 spots or what not.

Next, I was thinking of this round thing you could put under or next to heavy objects to help them roll ...

However, if the new site had a CC freeroll and CC helped their CC'er, with the CC user base, it could take off better. Just a thought.

I'm actually planning on writing a poker game this summer, mainly for my friends to play on and not have to worry about rake. So we could do like a $5 or $10 tournament where we all agree to pay the winner, and we save the $1/person rake that pokerstars would charge. I've thought of then trying to make this available to the public, just let anyone else play for fun with their friends or else against the general public. Not sure how popular it would be since you can do the same exact thing on pokerstars with a much cleaner interface (me doing it individually probably wouldn't be able to make something as clean as something a team of professional programmers probably did). The main appeal would be private tourneys, eliminating the rake factor. I'll let you know if I do get this done this summer, and maybe I can have some people here beta test it . But if it began to get popular and money came in through ads, making freerolls would definitely be a good idea. There are so many other free services funded by ads, why not poker?

Pretty good stuff and a good i dea even for local leagues...seeing that everyone pays up this would be pretty cool...keep this going and let us know how it goes......

as for the freeroll sight it would take a lot of work but it is possible and might actually work, but sometimes taking risks in the bussiness world pays off...

Actually, being that it would be word of mouth driven (little advertising budget, if any), and they are freerolls based off sponsorships (no backing of gaming $$). Really the only thing that would be needed is bandwith and server space, both of which can be held at your casa if you know what you're doing, until the sponsor $$ rolls in. Since there's no financial information being stored security is important, but not as much as with a site taking your banking info. All that would be needed to register is an email address really.

So really, I think it could be done for a MUCH smaller BR than a regular site. Having/making good contacts with sponsors would be very helpful. In the begining you would need to offer free advertising of their products until you build a user base. Once the user base get's large enough you could charge for space.

tru justpitching the thing to the sponsers would be the most important and hardest....also advertising and gettign the word out that it is acceptable too...you know all those free things tyhat are pop ups...i think some may thin its like that and stay away so...think about that too...

Zach, google Poker Mavens for some software that does exactly what you're talking about (unless you just want the challenge of doing the development). The server module is only $30 and the client software is free. It's actually pretty nice for single table tourneys.

There are several sites I know that already do what your talking about (basiclly). UBT.com and purepoker.com. You can play for free, or you can also join the site for $20 per month or something. If you play for free you can amount points and then win small cash prizes. If you join the site you can join more tournaments and have a chance to win more money.

It is legal because you never actually pay any kind of entry fee to join tournaments. If you pay your only paying for the right to play on members only ad free tournaments. Of course if you play for free there are a lot of ads.

Well most of what I was doing was mostly for the personal experience and fun, but I'll definitely keep that site bookmarked in case I want to do that before I'm done.

I'm not quite sure how you're invisioning it will work but....

Let me know how this goes... I can give ya a couple of tips on how to get packets out and back without opening ports in the firewall too.... your still gonna need some kinda public IP server (kindof ala Skype) to resolve IPs and such if its going to work across the internet... maybe rotate the random generator to the guy with the button...or pull from the main server
