Getting the price to call with a garbage hand but being very short stacked...

I had this problem today when i was playing a $4 rush poker tournement. There was antes in the pot, the high jack min raised my big blind. everybody folded i was holding 24 but i was getting 5/1 on a call! i had 4-5 big blinds left.. i called my price too too good. flop came AK2. My read told me he had probably an ace. i checked and the cheeky bastar* min raised me giving me 7/1 on a call. I had the price to catch 2 pair so i called. turn came a q ( can it get much worse?) and he min raised me again putting me all in! so i was getting 9/1 on a call! I had to call and he showed A5 and he won blank on the river... So should i have played this hand because the math said so or was it the standard play because the odds where far to good to let go?... ( by the why i was playing for the win i didnt care about cashing in or whatever...)

Even with 5-1 preflop, there is a decent chance he has you beat even if you do flop a pair. 4-5 bb is just enough so that you have a bit of fold equity left, so I think wait and shove soon is the best play. Being Rush, you don't know when you'll be big blind again, but after it hits you again you are pretty much done, so probably shoving any 2 cards when you are first to act is your line of play here.

Pot odds should not be the only reason to call in a tourney, which differs from cash games where you can easily reload. The math evens out over time, but if you are out of the tourney you are out of time.

Calling just because the odds say to when you know you are beat is a good way to lose a lot of tourneys.

With that stack you really can't call with anything unless you are planning a stop n go. Even if it was early, UTG min raises, everyone calls, and you are getting 8 to 1 preflop you should fold 24o. No flop is going to be good even if it hits you(Okay A35 or 356, but that's it!) It's just plain garbage. Not to mention being OOP. Other than that if your hand is worth playing(not 24o) in the BB stop n go is best way to go. You have no fold equity vs. a raise, but you do have shove equity if folded to you.

So basically almost any two cards you will be shoving when folded to you. It would be a much better play to shove 24o on the button with you BB situation than to ever call a raise with less than 10BB(stop n go not included).

Remember when playing tourneys if you drop under 10BB and you're going to play a hand you will be shoving 99% of the time. Also don't forget about antes. Either use adjusted BB or M(your stack divided by beginning pot). If using M any hand you are going to play at 5M you should shove. This don't mean to start shoving crap for no reason, just if you are going to play it shove it.

If your that short stacked you should of folded preflop if even you got the odds you dont have the cards

As mentioned above, with 4-5 blinds left, you need to shove or fold.

^^^ Or being in the BB with little to no fold equity stop n go. But yes, you should NEVER call here unless you are putting it in on the flop. This hand isn't even close to being good enough for that.
