"Full Tilt Poker"?Why did they chose that name?

I was talking to my friend today and I was telling him about how I'm playing much more internet poker on pokerstars and full tilt poker and such...He quickly laughs and asks me "Full tilt poker?Why is it called full tilt poker?It's like I'm opening a business and calling it 'Go broke Deals!' what's up with that man?"...

Well, I laughed and I couldn't really answer him but saying that maybe they speculate players going on tilt over how many hands they played or I don't know. But seriously, I'm curious now, why would they use such an unappealing name for a poker program rather than name it like the rest of the softwares?How come no one ever questioned something so obvious and simple before?(and funny I might add)

Do they wanna sleep better at night by telling us that we will experience much more bad beats on their site ?Lol, this puzzles me, that's why I'm posting it here to see if anybody else thought of this or if they have an idea about the real thought behind this choice of name...

Oh and "Bodog" is also weird I might add...Does it have a meaning or is a name just like that?(God I have to stop thinking about this !)

Spooky. I had the same thought yesterday. Probably been aware of FT for 4 years and that was the first time it ever struck to me it's a strange name.

Welcome to the super-fun-happy world of marketing - for the most part it doesn't matter a damn what a name actually means, as long as you remember it and associate the right things with it.

I thought about it several times in the past, the first time I thought about it was when I went from $63 to $0 in less than 5mins LOL. I've gone to $50 to $0 numerous times so it doesn't surprise me why they would name the site "Full Tilt Poker".

'Full Tilt' implies, at least to me, that you'll be tilting past the point of no return, and the outcome will of course not be good. The only positive spin I can think of is maybe everyone else is on tilt. So you can go in there anytime and take everyones money & run before you find yourself on tilt.

Considering many have come to affectionately call it 'Blodog', this is a good question. And what's up with 'Carbon'? Maybe it means 'only we win' in Romanian.

Hahaha . In romanian only we win translates doar noi castigam. And i do not think it is true. I lost at heads up final table 50$ freeroll to a damn chinese guy who slowplayed me with AA when he got full house. Made me go all in on the river with 3 of kind.
But the fact there are a lot of romanians there because of the publicity and cose there are a lot of fish to take money from. There are some good romanian players on internet.

No doubt there are many good ones. Glad you posted here. I've often wondered and occasionally posted here, why there were indeed so many Romanian players on Carbon. You mention publicity. Why? Is it a Romanian based site? Or is it like a small site and once a few Romanians tell their friends, the word spreads? A lot of Eastern Bloc countries, and never understood why. Very little U.S. comparatively, just odd, considering the financial disparity. In all fairness, most of my experience Carbon is in freerolls. But still.

Same goes for the majority of sites.

The real question is how did Poker Stars get to be the biggest in the market with a name as generic as theirs?

Simple.

To someone who just learned how to play poker, or is new to playing online poker, the name "Poker Stars" VS. "Full Tilt Poker" seems WAY more appealing simply because they may think "Full Tilt Poker" is some sort of different type of poker, hence the name. Some don't even understand the meaning.

I believe this is the reason why a lot more bad players are on PS, and why more better players play at FTP, simply because they understand the name at first glance.

I do not know . I think a lot of them are students and the news travels fast between them. There are a lot of college sites in Romania , forums and i think someone started the wave somewhere and thousands of ppl found aboout the site. Anyway there are not as many romanians as on Full Tilt or Pokerstars. They seems to be a lot on Carbon because there are few ppl from other nations.

They are not the same company, but they are part of the BodogBrand licensee portfolio- these companies license the "Bodog" brand name from BodogBrand.com.

Thanks for the explanation. Becky, if you're still around... We have a thread going about the Bodog OFC going, and I'm all signed up, but here's part of what I posted....

"I sure hope they solve their software issues by then. Tried the freeroll a couple days ago, and it was horrible, each card dealt to each person slowly spins around the table, twirling as it spins. It's your turn before you get your cards, then...poof, it often freezes. I'm gonna try a few more, and start complaining long before the OFC tourneys."

Anyway, when it freezes, you yet the screen that offers you a choice of 1) waiting, or 2) rebooting the client. Sometimes I waited. When it came back, sometimes I miss the hand, lose a bet, sometimes, I'd make it back in time. And rebooting didn't help much. This happened to me in about 1/2 the hands. Occasionally it would work fine for 3 hands in a row, then boom, start crashing all over again. This went on for about an hour, til I just gave up, probably tilted and shoved. lol.

FYI, my computer is very, very fast. I have cable. This happens to me at no other poker site. Maybe once every few months at Full Tilt. But I play there almost daily. Bodog, not so much, and happens every time for the past...IDK 3 - 6 months? BTW, I asked at the table if anyone else was having issues. One guy said yes, no one else answered me. Any ideas? PMed Becky with a link to this thread, and she got back to me. They are looking into it. Bodog has a special place in my heart. They were the very first site I was on and deposited on (maybe 3 years ago), toll-free-number with great customer service (and I've called a handful of times), and great prop bets in the sports betting.

i think its supossed to be one of those relatable angles. 'Hey i've been on mega tilt before - this site must get me, im playing their.....' and such forth. most advertising these days is that goofy

Ok, I do want to confirm that the Bodog Poker Manager received my message which included your feedback and here is the response:

"We are working on it. With every release, the client gets lighter and uses less computer resources- over time it will become more and more rare that these problems occur".

yeah fulltilt is a strange name for it but everyone does go on tilt

You don't think it's got anything to do with their loyalty programs, endorsements, marketing campaigns or reputation for exceptional customer service?

Wouldn't all that stuff better correlate with the sheer number of players, as opposed to quality of said players? Anyway, I'd say Poker Stars has the edge in customer service, and I see them advertise all the time on those televised tournaments, give marketing a wash/tie. I'd give Full Tilt the edge for loyalty programs (which are of great significance to frequent, winning players) and certainly endorsements (far more of the biggest names in poker play there than at Poker Stars).

There are a few things that Full Tilt does brilliantly. It names a lot of tables after the pros, and makes it easy for you to find and watch them(highlighted in red) - some of them, usually lesser known, will even chat a bit at the rail. The Academy also makes for a very robust site. Silly, but I usually give in to the tempations of 'Happy Hour', and their Take 2 promo was excellent.

LOL, i am sure you can PIN this all on the donks who think they can beat a pro by playing like a donkey...

I used to work at alot of bars in my younger days, alot of them being strip clubs.... and there was a ton of Bodoggin' goin' on back in those days.

There is another meaning to the phrase "Full Tilt" There is an expression of doing something at "Full Tilt" i.e. he was running full tilt; meaning to give it everything he had. They may have intended a double meaning.

I'm not saying it doesn't, but for something such as an online poker site, the name will make a big difference.

To a lot of players new or new to online poker, pokerstars just seems like it would be cooler than names like FullTilt, Bodog, DoylesRoom, ect.

English is not my native language.So,although I feel weird about the name of "fulltilt",I dont know whether or not that is because my english is not so good.

Sorry for the delay, I've been away for a while and missed this first time around.

My point is, is Poker Stars really that great a name? Is it a substantially better name than, say, Party Poker? Is it really all that different to Poker Room, Pacific Poker, Titan Poker, Carbon Poker, Everest Poker, Winner Poker or any of the other formulaic XYZ Poker names?

I suggest that it's really not - as a name, Poker Stars really isn't that different to any of its competition. Where it does differ from its competition is in the areas I mentioned above.

Anywho, what I'm saying is that as long as the name is easy to remember, to a large extent it really doesn't matter what it is and it goes for most things, not just poker sites. Limp Bizkit has to be about one of the dumbest names for a band EVER, for example, but it didn't stop them from selling a truckload of albums because their product was what the market wanted at the time.

Having a product that the market wants (which both Stars and Full Tilt obviously do) will render your actual name irrelevant 99% of the time.

The word tilt in poker actually comes from pinball, when if a player got mad and shook the machine to make it go where he wanted.

You've pretty much proven my point, I remember being new and what I was looking for. "PokerStars" is the most appealing website vs all those names you said. Come on, "Titan Poker"? "Winner Poker" -- that one just makes me lol.

Pokerstars promotes a lot and is also in the top search results, I still stand by the name is what attracts more donks. I use to once like this site wayy better than FTP, now I HATE playing on PS (can't stand it actually), and only enjoy playing on FTP.

This has been the same way for my poker friends, just the name attracted them, "FullTiltPoker" just confused them.
