First live game

Today i played my first live game of poker. I had 4hrs to kill so i went down to Crown casino (melbourne) and sat down at the $2/3 nlhe game. It was the game with the smallest blinds running so i went there. I had only $50 so i was under rolled but i thought id give it a go.

I just said ill play tight and wait for a good opportunity to come and get my money in. I was folding for about 3 rounds and was down to $30. I picked up Ah10h on the button. A guy in mid position raised it to 15 and then i called, sb went allin for around $50 and the other guy called and so did I. Sb turns over KQ and the other guy shows KJ. The board was all rags and i ended up winning about a $110 pot. Didnt play a hand for about 25mins and then i got AKos. 3 way pot with two guys all-in, i thought about folding it but ended up going all in as well.

Lost that hand with one guys 10's holding up against my AK and someones elses AQ. Good experience playing with these guys and i didnt mind loosing that bad. Any tips and criticism is welcomed as i would like to learn from my mistakes. Also was that a bad play going all in with AK?

lol the AK hand is fine the way you described it, but going way underrolled was probably your biggest mistake. next time have enough money to throw around in a live game and you'll fare better.

hope you had fun at least !

Someone else from Melbourne, huzzah!

I haven't played at Crown since they got rid of the 1-2 games earlier this year. I know 2-3 used to be where the 'serious' players went to avoid the drunks and recreational 1-2 players. Personally, the few times I played I was happy being against drunk 1-2 players, there was some awful, awful play going on

Anywho, you'll probably find the game pretty different if you go back on a weekend or on a Friday night, during the day on a weekday you'll mostly just be playing against grinders and regulars.

What are they charging for time at 2-3? I know it was $5/hr at 1-2, plus the rake on the pot.

re: First live game poker

Congratulations on your first live game! Just keep in mind, that the game you experience at lower limits and in lesser-known casinos is an ENTIRELY different game than what you'll find as you progress. When you're at a micro-table, for instance, in the $2 to $5 range, you get something similar to the freerolls online - maniacs with money and time to kill, who are there more to play than win. They sometimes don't mind calling your As Ks all in with Jh 3s just to see what happens. Also, when you bump up (say, $30-$60, or games with a "quick-kill" blind setup), you'll feel like you're under the world's biggest microscope! For your sake (and your wallet's), make sure you are (1) entirely comfortable at lower limits and (2) regularly successful at the table before you decide to upgrade. Otherwise, you'll smell like food to the sharks at the big-stack tables as soon as you sit down! Good luck!

There's probably a bit of local knowledge behind this - Crown is actually the only casino in town so if people are playing live casino poker in Melbourne, they're playing it there. It also hosts the Aussie Millions tournament.

They rarely offer limits as high as $30-$60 either. Especially during the week, they're proably not getting higher than $10-$20.

We've probably gotta get on a plane to put ourselves under a microscope
