cash or tourny?

Hi guys, I had an opinion question. I am really trying to make a living from poker, but have been

having trouble finding "my game". I tried cash, up down up down then completely broke. I tried

sit&gos, but slow money. How do you feel about this? Are cash games better or sit&go's??

Thanks people,
Best Regards!

Cash or tourny?

I've never actually tried tourneys on a regular basis. I would just go for mostly cash games. Times when I want a change of pace I would just play a large MTT or smaller SnG just to see what it's like. Mostly to change it up though, I would go from NL to Limit Hold'em.

I'd like to see what other people think about this as well. I'm not in a position to try and play for a living...at least not now...maybe later in life though!

this is the biggest part of your whole post. You cant make a living playing tourney poker, at least when you 1st start out. All tourney pros starting playing cash games, most make their buy ins for big tourneys from cash games. If you cant beat cash games work on that and put tourneys on the back burner for right now.

I have found that cash games are better for building a bankroll. The blinds don't go up so, you have more time to sit back and wait for premium hands. There are allot of over bettors in small buy in, multi table tourneys. The pay outs are big but, to many people don't see it as loosing hundreds of $, they only see it as loosing $1 or $2, sometimes less depending on the tourney. With ring games the amount of chips you have represents "real" money. I follow a pretty standard formula when I play in cash games. #1, always buy-in with the maximum allowed. #2 stick with premium hands. #3 if the bet is worth calling, it's worth raising, and #4 never let your game bank roll drop below 50% of your buy-in amount. The problem with playing in tourney's, SNGs or multi table is, you may run into a cold run of cards so, you just keep folding. At the same time, those blinds are going up. Hope this helps a little. Good luck to you

Not sure I agree entirely with you here stormswa. There are some guys in the SnG arena who absolutely couldn't play a cash game to save ther lives. They have purely built there bankroll up playing SnG's and make a pretty decent living from it.

As for me I built my BR up playing purely SnG's, I'm now mixing it up a little, combining the 2 before I decide which one is gonna take my BR to the next level .

I personally think you can build your bankroll with either type of game. You really need to find out which type suits your style of play. Play well within your BR and build it up slowly. Very few players are lucky enough to build a BR up rapidly, for the majority of us it's a long slow grind.

Im reading my post over and over again and I still dont see anywhere that I mention sit and gos?

the title of thread is "cash or tourny" (yes I spelled it wrong because its spelled wrong in OP), STT and MTT are 2 way different worlds.

so I guess he is talking about STT and not MTT then after reading his post again, yes you can grind STT many people do it but I wouldnt for a living but thats just my personal thing. The grind of STT is a pain. BUT there are a lot that can Zeejustin is the 1st that comes to mind, when he was playing online this was his major thing.

well, im working a lot on my mtt gameplay, and im using 18 man SnG's to fund it basically. i've just found a formula that works pretty much 1/2 the time (mostly it doesnt work when i go card dead, but what does when youre card dead?) so i use that to fund my bigger buyin MTTs. once i get comfortable enough with my MTT play and get my bankroll big enough (say 1k ish area) i will probably start working on the 50nl or 100 nl cash games

Personally, I like some small private trnys. Like 9-18 ppl. You can play a patient game in the beginning and in the end try to pressure up. it´s quite easy, even if there are just 3-4 ITM. Normally, you can wait for a good hand and outplay your opponent. your loss is determined to the buy-in.
at a cash-game you can loose a lot in short term..... dont like that.

id just stay on sng untill u get a big enough roll and have the odd dabble into cash games. but besure not play above what u feel comfortable with cos in a cash game there is much more pressure than sngs if ure playin above ure roll

I think the most important thing is just knowing how to manage your bank roll appropriately, and for cash games, knowing when to STAND UP.

If you don't have a long range plan, you're not going to make a whole lot of money no matter which style of game you play.

Personally, while I love tournaments, I can consistently win money at cash tables. I especially like the freedom of being able to move around and pick my opponents.

Personally I play tournaments because I am addicted to them and they are fun.

Ring games to fund the addiction and keep the roll moving.

The problem with cash games is that you can win big quickly or lose quickly and it might take less time to go either way. But in tourneys, mostly the big ones you're gonna have to play usually for around 5 hours to make it to the final table, which is usually where you get all the money. So if you're the patient kind of guy and you don't want people with average hands calling you down till the river and beating you, you should stick to tourneys. In cash games people tend to be a little loose, and because of that I often lose great hands lol.

All right, one person says play tournaments to fund ring games, another use ring games to fund tournaments. Why not just play the style where you win?

Interesting to read everybody's reply. It seems like at the end, it really all depends on the person. For example for me, i go on tilt fast and i stay on tilt long! lol, i lose so much money on 10-20... but then i again i almost never lose in sngs. I'm trying to make about 500 a month only from $10 sngs... which is not that hard because to get 3rd really and make 10 bucks, you just fold and go all in when necessary with high card... seems to be working... and if you go on tilt, then you bust out go to sleep take a break and try again... the thing about cash games is once you go on tilt... UH OH! lol, which is why i guess it really depends on the person.. but it was nice to hear all your input, made me think about my stuff too. thanks a lot guys.

happy pokering!
