Basic kicker question

If I was holding A 4 and my opponent was holding A 9 and the board showed the following:

7d Tc Ad 8s 5c

I lost the showdown because he had the higher kicker. But with the Tc on the board (which is higher than both our kickers), shouldn't it have been a split pot?

His Hand= A, A, 10, 9, 8

Your hand= A, A, 10, 8, 7

If theres a tie at any point you go to the next card, so his 9 beats your 8.

Hey you can't learn unless you ask questions. I have a couple people at my home games that still can't wrap their minds around this.

Then we play Omaha just to mess with them.

Hey, some guys I used to play some dealer calls it crap with, and who have been together for years now, still use a hand written paper to remind them of what beats what. So, no worries about needing to ask basic questions. If more people took the time to do that, there would be better players and less home game disputes.

I was at my dads a while back, theyve been playing lots of holdem so we played a bit.

Had to explaim to him that you dont automatically split a pot if you both hit a flush, if one has a higher flush card than the board, etc

I borrowed (well stole) this from a previous answer to the same question a couple of weeks ago.

"In the showdown the BEST 5 card hand is used. So that means if you have a low kicker in your hand and a card on the board is better, then the better card would play"

When i first played 7 card stud i didn't realise that one Ace flush could beat another Ace flush -my family always played 9 card brag where the other cards dont make a difference to a flush (no countback).
