Bankroll strategy

Lets say your roll has gotten to the point its time to start playing higher stakes games. ie NL $100 buy in cash games. If you go by rule of thumb rules on bankrolls and the stakes of the game you have an idea the bankroll size. Skill level good enough to get a positive result at the higher games. Would you "hedge" your bets by still playing mostly low limit games while playing 1 big game or tournament a day. Also narrow the number of sites down to 2 or 3 max or play many sites especially new ones where you could maximize bonus money. All hypothetical situations. Ideas?

Well, depends on your standard win rate and how far above the 300x the big blind you are for NL bankroll. If you have been on a good run, then you will have to account for varience. It might have just been a good run rather than just your play and the bad luck is around the corner.

I had a good run stepped up and the beats kept coming. This of course meant I was losing it faster than I won it. The hard thing is to step back down the limits again. I have done so now cause I went very close to losing everything I had built up ;]

Maybe start off playing on the larger limit at once a week and see how it goes. If you have a losing session there don't play on it again till you have built back up what you lost. Don't for goodness sake though start chasing on the higher limits, sure you can win it back quicker but thats usually the case.

Going onto playing on different sites, I would generally stick to the ones you have been playing well on. Though I wouldn't rule out playing on somewhere new to take advantage of any good bonuses that are running.

Whatever you decide though, don't be afraid to step back down and grind it out for longer.

Not really a run I would call a variance grum. My cautious nature tells me to stay at the games you are beating regularly. What has happened is I got back to cash games instead of playing tourneys mostly and the games I am playing are best related to nickle slots. Just trying to work out a good strategy as best to "invest". Its either stick to the lower limits and have Neteller send me loot, at which point my favorite stripper would be happy or go ahead and play games that my roll can easily absorb.
I am trying to look at like I would look at an investment diversify or bank the profits. In other words how to best maximize risk v. reward. Your thoughts are appreciated thanks

Well as I am currently building my roll back up after 2 months of stupid play, hopefully I can share some insight.

Now first off don't start taking money out of the bankroll or you will get nowhere. No matter how nice those strippers look ;]

When the roll is big enough to move up then do so, from the sounds of your cautious play your not going to get as many swings as I do. After you have moved up your roll will increase a bit faster if you keep winning the same way.

If you really have to take money out of the roll then I would wait till after you have moved up and won some more. Though generally the more you have the higher you can move up and win more faster. As long as you don't either overextend your bankroll by taking out of it too much (I don't touch mine have a totally seperate bank account for it all) or by playing at limits too high, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Also the games are more fun as you move up (apart from the beats as you lose more heh) as you can start to play with more deception and pull the odd fancy play.

Yeah I do miss having to actually "play" not having to apply deception and varying my bets. Yeah the good thing is its all "house" money in that everything I intially invested has long been brought back home. I like the idea of one big game a week. While still grinding it out at lower limits the rest of the time. Decided I'm not gonna make a big deposit at a room till next week, which should be enough time to finalize a base strategy. Yeah unless my good friend Jack Daniels comes for a visit I am the definition of tight aggressive. In cash games anyway. I just need to knock the rust off my tourney play used to be my strength now my play has just been off because most internet tournament players "gamble" more with their stacks, plus I start applying my cash game betting patterns and I just need to adjust back.

Most people are too careless with their bankroll. Alot has to do with if you are playing limit or no limit. The key is to not play stakes that are too high for your roll. There is a book called Internet Texas Hold'em that has a great section on bankroll management. The book focuses on limit, but the principles can definitely be applied to no-limit with more caution obviously.
