Annoying Rail Birds

I've gotten to where I'm finding two kinds of online poker rail birds to be incredibly annoying: those that watch just to talk trash and berate all the players, and those who find their friends and use that chat like their own IM and talk about everything BUT poker. The first is especially lame, and those people whose lives are so sad that they have to talk smack to online strangers in games they have no part of are pathetic.

I'm almost to the point to where I disable chat for at least the first few rounds of play in a tourney, which is too bad b/c sometimes you can pick up little bits of information there.

Me, too, Sue, I enjoy the social aspect of the chatbox. Tho I understand there are some not so chatty cathys out there. That's why I like the "Turn Observer chat" function for them. I don't the nastiness, either.

My point here is....

If you are trying to absorb the descipline you need to succeed in poker, how can you let a silly thing like chat from people you do not even know or can see or will run into in real life, affect your poker game to the extent you give up positive information.

In my opinion, You must overlook these types of distractions (and much worse). If you plan on improving your game.

Good Luck

Really can't let people who are playing with you get in your head, let alone those who aren't even in the game. Either turn the chat off or just ignore 'em.

Chat box is better then listening to rail birds live! Online you can just mute them. If you muted them in a live game you would catch a case!

I used to get annoyed / frustrated with some on the BS chat that was going on but most times that is what the chatters are attempting to do. Just turn the chat off and breath deep through your nose and out your mouth. better to miss a little extra information then allowing words to affect your game.

re: Annoying Rail Birds poker

Most of the time I'm able to ignore the chat or just take it for a bit of mild entertainment. However, I have recently gotten annoyed and responded when somebody who had overplayed AK repeatedly and managed to survive calling all in against pocket pairs, said I was a bad poker player when I outdrew someone who had tried to trap me.

From my experience, those who talk trash only stay for a little while then leave if it seems like nobody is listening to them. If they are staying for a long time, most likely you or other players are paying attention to them. As for the second point, some people don't bother to ask for a friend's instant messaging screen name and they only find each other at the poker tables which is fine. I can't complain if two friends chatting with each other, and because they are the most chatty, it's more likely going to shy off the other players from chatting about any useful information you may be able to use against them. That's just my thoughts about this.

Yes, I was half expecting that Merlin guy to turn up and start lecturing us again, he always seemed to turn up whenever Railbirds forum was mentioned here.

Point well taken, WEC. I think my favorite chat term has to be "zzzzzzzzzz," which usually results in all of the players taking as much time as possible before acting in order to piss the poster off. If I want to slow the game down for any reason, "zzzzzzz" will usually do the trick!

Luckily, both types of chatters usually disappear as the tourneys go on, so they aren't much of a nuisance once it's time to concentrate fully on the game at hand.

Just a note...I love to use the chat box to annoy people

But it is just my "loser" type of entertainment - and it is cheap
