No Pokah!

Fredrik Paulsson @ 8:46 pm - Filed under Poker General.

I play no pokah, no sir.

All in all this last week, I managed to scrounge up about 200 (Edit: I just played 200 more, so 400) hands. The time, the energy and - most importantly - the will to play just wasn’t there. So where does this leave me? Well, after starting over at $1/$2, I’ve played a whooping 2500 hands, for a total profit of $85 (yes, that means I’m down since last time I reported on my progress) and I have a total of 8449 VPPs left to earn before the year is over. God help me.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m actually below the threshold for what I consider a decent bankroll for 1/2, but I’m playing there nonetheless. My edge in these games is - should be, at least - huge. Today, I played with a guy who bet out on this river:

A-A-A-9-2, three of which were diamonds. He got raised by the guy who had called him all the way.

… and then he 3-bets. Not with the case ace, mind you. Not even with a pocket pair larger than 9s, or even the nines itself. Not even with a deuce. He 3-bets with a flush that got there on the river. That’s how bad some of these players are, and how egregious (how I’ve waited to use that word!) their play can be.

This, honestly, is the worst mistake I can conceive anyone to make. You can cold call a preflop cap with 7-2o and I won’t hold it against you as long as there’s a guy at the table who will re-raise this river with a hand that beats absolutely nothing that raises and is going to showdown.

Anyway. I have a lot of poker to play this month if I’m going to realize my goal of supernova. In reality, my chances look slim because there are just too many other things going on. Then again, I have quite a few days off around christmas where it’s perfectly possible to put in quite a lot of hours at the tables. With some luck, the game selection will be good too, with people overfed, sleepy and perhaps drunk on egg nog willing to play.
