So.

I turned 30 yesterday. I’m told by some that this means that I’m officially an adult now, I’m told by others that it means I’m really, really old. Yet others tell me that I’m still practically a baby. I wish they’d make up their minds; and personally I don’t feel that much different from two days ago. Hell, I was carded at the liquor store on Saturday. I suppose I should start taking that as a compliment.

I’ve kept trying to play heads-up sessions, but I’m starting to see a problem with playing heads-up at the limits I’m currently at: Rake really is ridiculous. Against many opponents, their mistakes minus my mistakes is enough to overcome the rake, but far from all of them. And if I’m playing someone who’s better than me, then I’m really in trouble. It sucks that I have to weigh “fun” versus “affordable.” I wish the rake structure at Stars would be changed, but I doubt it will be. Perhaps I’ll go back to grinding 6-max until I can build a bankroll big enough to play in games where the rake doesn’t eat up 75% of my expected earnings.

Anyway.

I’ve set a goal for myself to reach Supernova this year, which will actually take a bit of work. I realize that compared to many of the online professionals, Supernova is something that is easily achieved in March, but with a full time job, some fairly time-demanding hobbies (golf being one of them, reading and movies another) and a fairly active social life, getting the necessary amount of hands in every month is quite a chore. Still, I believe it’s well within reach. Once there, I’ll be able to claim a $1500 cash bonus, which is going to make quite a difference to my humble bankroll (especially after the month of July, from here on known as the “Why Does God Hate Me” month).

August, while not being a complete disaster like July, hasn’t been great either. I’m just below break-even, although I’m optimistic about ending the month on a positive note. I need to play another 5k hands or so in the next week, which is going to be hard, but doable. And if I can’t do it…. Well, whatever.
