March Did Not End Well
Variance sucks.
6-max limit hold ‘em variance sucks, as a friend of mine would put it, “leeks.”
Mid-March, I hit a downswing of about 130 BBs, knocking me out for about a third of my bankroll. Well, okay - that sucked, but I’m bankrolled for that eventuality. I played on, and had managed to work myself up again by the end of the month. I was even up a little. This was Friday morning.
And then I crashed again, dropping 100 BB in one session. That was new for me; my first time showing more than a $1,000 loss in a single session. March, in other words, ended up being a bit of a disaster. Bankroll-wise. But, meh… I’m not a professional. I don’t depend on poker winnings to make a living. It’s getting increasingly easy to shrug off losses when I think of my bankroll more as I’d consider a stock market investment; I’m expecting to show a long-term profit so I shouldn’t get upset by short-term swings. The analogy isn’t perfect - in fact, it’s severely flawed in many ways - but it helps me cope with downswings and keep a healthy perspective on my bankroll.
Anyway.
Here’s to hoping that April ends up better. Whatever happens with poker, I sure have an exciting month ahead of me: Our new house is almost ready to move into now, and we get the keys on April 19. Woo!
