I did something today I’ve never done before: I wrote to a member of parliament. Yesterday, a poker tournament in Swedish Grebbestad was set to take place. Police raided, and one person is now arrested on the charges of (pardon if I’m not using the correct term) illegal gambling. The players are not guilty of any crime, but arranging and hosting a game like this is illegal.

The police did their job. Make no mistake about that.

But it’s time that Swedish lawmakers did theirs. At the bottom is a copy of the letter I sent (for my Swedish readers) and what follows is a translation. I realize that this will not have a great impact on most of my readers’ lives but this is a blog - and this is what I’ve been up to lately.

I’m writing regarding the article on dn.se March 23rd ( http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=147&a=632017 ), concerning the police raid on a poker tournament in Grebbestad. I myself was not a part of this tournament (I wasn’t even aware of it) but the news of the bust made me both upset and, honestly, hopeful.

Upset, because the police is (correctly) acting on a law that is obsolete and strikes against one of the most popular card games in Sweden today. The law should be changed. There are no good arguments for why bridge tournaments are okay, but poker tournaments are not - and being a liberal, you surely understand that I’m in no way suggesting that we outlaw bridge tournaments.

I’m hopeful, because I see a glimpse of good news in more people becoming aware of how our country’s laws are written when it comes to poker. You realize of course the hypocrisy in forbidding poker tournaments everywhere but in the government controlled casinos [parenthesis comment on matter of pluralizing “casino” in Swedish - I have no idea].

I can understand why the legality of poker playing may not be seen as the top priority for the Swedish Riksdag [parliament], but considering how popular the game is today it’s about time that clear laws are put in place. The difference is obvious: poker tournaments are going to take place regardless if their legal or not - this is how big the demand for them are. With proper legislation it will happen with approved permits, possibly taxation of fees/winnings and the possibility for the Lottery Inspection to make sure that everything is fair. With blanket bans, they will take place in basements, without legal protection for the participants, and with no tax income for the government.

I see no winners with today’s laws.

Jag var inte själv med i turneringen (jag visste inte ens att den tog plats) men nyheten att tillslaget hade skett gjorde mig både upprörd och, faktiskt, förhoppningsfull.

Upprörd, därför att polisen agerar (korrekt) enligt en lag som är förlegad och slår mot en av de mer populära kortspelen i sverige idag. Lagen borde ändras. Det finns inga bra argument för varför bridge-turneringar är OK men pokerturneringar inte är det -och som liberal förstår du säkert att jag inte på något sätt propagerar för att göra bridge-turneringar olagliga.

Förhoppningsfull, därför att jag ser en ljusning i att fler blir medvetna om hur landets lagar egentligen förhåller sig till poker. Du inser själv hyckleriet i att förbjuda pokerturneringar överallt utom i statliga kasinon (kasinos? vem vet).

Jag kan förstå varför pokerspelandets legalitet inte upplevs som högsta prioritet för Sveriges Riksdag, men med tanke på hur populärt spelet är idag är det hög tid att tydlig lagstiftning kommer på plats. Skillnaden är uppenbar; pokerturneringarna kommer att ta plats oavsett lagstiftning - så stor är efterfrågan. Med bra lagstiftning sker det med ansökta tillstånd, eventuell beskattning på vinster/avgifter och möjlighet för kontrollanter från lotteri-inspektionen att se till att allt går rätt till. Med blanka förbud tar de plats i källare, utan rättsligt skydd för deltagarna, och utan skatteintäkter för staten.

Jag ser ingen vinnare med dagens lagstiftning.
