Poker Blog Roll.

Fredrik Paulsson @ 10:10 am

Without further ado, here are the poker blogs that I read on an at least weekly basis, and I’ll list them in the order that they show up in Google Reader, so really without any kind of “which I like best” priority.

Stick’s Poker Blog, or, as my Reader calls it “Unknown Title.” I dunno what’s up with that. MrSticker is a CardsChat regular and posts about once a week. I like keeping tabs of what the CC bloggers are up to. By the way, if you’re a CC regular who blogs and you don’t find your own blog listed in this roll, leave a comment or shoot me a PM so I can add it to the list of stuff I read.

Bigger Deal, which I’m not really comfortable calling a “blog.” Tony Holden, Lee Jones and others write semi-regularly here and the posts tend to be very long (for blog posts, but normal-length for newspaper articles, I guess) and more of the “here’s an anecdote” kind rather than updates on what’s up in their respective lives. Still, the posts are well written and sometimes interesting. I unfortunately tend to skip them often because the longer format makes them an investment of time that I usually don’t have; I tend to read blogs when I have a minute to spare while compiling and Bigger Deal’s posts just aren’t chunked like that.

Bill’s Blog, by Bill Rini. I started keeping up with Bill when he disagreed with something I wrote and so I of course felt compelled to respond to his argument. And then he retorted with the “you’re wrong” argument, which… Well, it leaves something to be desired. I got a bit testy at that point, and perhaps that came through in my last post on the matter. Either way, Bill either never saw my response or didn’t feel compelled to add anything further.

Canadian Dream, by my man Taylor aka ChuckTs. Another CardsChat regular, and a guy who’s starting to do pretty well for himself in poker, grinding it out at the smaller stakes. His heart is in the right place and I think he will go pretty far as a poker player if he keeps at it. Keep those graphs coming, Taylor; I go “yay!” everytime they point up and “ack!” everytime they point down - but I’m always interested.

Dead Money = Sir Al Can’t Hang, which is one of the blogs that I’m starting to feel like I have up there because “I should.” It’s a little like Bill Rini’s blog. Sir Al arranges the Battle of The Bloggers Tournaments, which is one of those things that I just never can seem to simultaneously find the time for AND remember. Still, I read his posts, even if I tend to skip over parts of his posts. Should he happen to read this: Al - sorry. I apparently have the attention span of a two-year-old.

Haley’s Poker bl-auggh!!, is one my “can’t really remember when I stared reading” blogs, but I follow it.

Hard Boiled Poker, one of the blogs I keep a closer tab on. Shamus writes well, and has earned his place among my “read immediately when new post” blogs. As opposed to stuff like Bigger Deal and Sir Al Can’t Hang which I tend to wait until I have more spare time or am more bored. Again, no offense to either of those blogs intended - I gotta be allowed to have favorites, right?

Terrence “Not Johnny” Chan, is a heads-up limit hold ‘em specialist playing high stakes, and also travels a bit with the tournament circus it seems. I like his posts; they’re usually short, often funny, sometimes thought provoking and show a great deal of smart. Thumbs up.

Irexes Happy Fun Poker Blog, written by another CC regular, Irexes. He’s a guy I find cool and interesting. He doesn’t update his blog often enough, though, but that just adds to the mystery.

Gary Carson writes three blogs that I follow more or less attentively: Math and Poker, Playing No-Limit Poker and Poker Culture. Not sure why he uses three separate blogs instead of categorizing one blog, but whatever works for him. Gary occasionally writes something very interesting, but it seems like most of the time he unfortunately spends his time disagreeing with Ed Miller seemingly out of spite, heh, or making fun of Daniel Negreanu or restating his case against Mason Malmuth. Either way, I liked his book, and I think he’s right about more than he usually gets credit for when it comes to poker theory. Speaking of Ed Miller…

Noted Poker Authority, Ed Miller’s blog. Almost entirely strategy related content, and it puts the rest of us out here in the blogosphere to shame with our so-called strategy posts. If you play poker and don’t read this, I think it’s likely that you’re costing yourself money.

Party Poker Blog, a.k.a. Guinnes and Poker, a.k.a. Iggy’s blog. My heart breaks a little every time there’s a new post there, because the man who once used to work under the motto “destroying workplace productivity” with his uber posts of endless links, gossip, pictures and other goodies, has now basically reduced himself to three things: Quoting in full (although usually not linking) the occasional newspaper article on something poker related, quoting in full articles related to the US presidential race, usually with a very obvious slant of pro-Obama, con-Hillary, and posting poker stories by Johnny Hughes. Unfortunately, the lion’s share of his posts are in the second category. And if you’re wondering what exactly it is Iggy writes himself in all of this, you’re touching a good point. I think my post here today contains more words than he’s written himself in the past year. And he keeps promising an upcoming uber, but it never shows up. We miss you, Iggy, come back to the dark side. Blog about politics if you really feel you have to, but give us that uber that you’ve talked about for six months now. :(

Paul Phillips, which… Well, it’s perhaps not entirely fair to call this a poker blog. He used to be a poker player, and he occasionally references poker. However, I added it to Google Reader as a poker blog, and darnit, I’m going to link it here.

Pot Committed, by Change100. This blog sort of falls in the same category as Sir Al’s blog, in that I keep it there for the occasional nugget (which more often than not means a drunken picture of Dr. Pauly - more on him in a minute) but tend to very quickly browse through a lot of the posts. Especially the latest ones on American Idol which I for natural reasons am not following.

StoxPoker, has blogs from many of their pros. It’s on my “read immediately” list, because so often, it’s a post by Leatherass. And he’s just so brutally honest about how he’s doing at poker, how he feels about it and everything else he does. It’s refreshing to read what someone actually thinks, as opposed to most people - like myself - who tend to write what we think will make us look good. Shame on us - good for you, Dusty!

Dr. Pauly and his Tao of Poker. Being arguably the king of poker blogs, and certainly setting the bar for what poker blogging can be, he’s - and I feel a bit bad about this - on my B-list. Not that I don’t like his posts - au contraire, mon frere! - but they tend to be long and referring back to my statement on how I award slots of about 1-2 minutes to read blogs, his posts tend to get to wait for a day or two before I get to them. Nonetheless, this is A++. Vegas, poker tournament tour, strippers, hookers, booze, and “5 last pros I’ve pissed next to” makes for a superb poker blog.

Tenbob’s Poker Blog, another CC regular. He’s in my “immediate read” list. ‘Nuff said.

Lawschool Dropout, a blog that I fear may have recently made its last post (I base this on the contents of the post and that it’s called “Epilogue”). Very well written, but… Yeah, I can see how you may not be interested in picking up a blog whose corpse is still warm, so to speak.

The Poker Chronicles, is with Pauly in my will-read-when-I-have-more-time due to the length (and lack of pretty pictures!) of his posts, but is worth the wait. High quality blog; thumbs up.

Up For Poker, a blog that I at least used to read. It seems to be going through a low period of posting right now, but we’ll see if it jumps back up.

And finally, You Can’t Miss What You Can’t Measure, by Shane Schleger, a blog that has had a whopping 4 posts since May. Still, those four have been pretty good and I’m hoping he’ll pick it up again. If nothing else, you can’t really say that you’ll lose a lot of time reading that blog due to its low post intensity, right?

So these are the poker blogs that I follow. Note that these aren’t ALL the poker blogs I’ve ever read - I actually do weed out the ones that I after awhile realize that I’m not actually interested in - so all of them are blogs I consider keepers. If you feel like you’d like to be on this list, let me know and I’ll have a look.
